Rear parking sensors have never worked since I've owned the car. I always assumed they'd been turned off by the dealer at the previous owner's request. Lexus garage says no - fault is with the reversing aid ECU and buzzer. Say both need replacing at a fitted cost of about £600.

Questions: can anyone say where these items are located, whether fitting is easy or difficult, whether they're available as aftermarket items and at what cost?

This what you need cost roughly 160.00 new.

madasahatter - that's great! Many thanks - but where does it go and how?

I think Linas has answered that one for you. I thought it may of been on right hand side with the amp.

it is actually "simple" to access as well, the only thing you need is to remove the inner boot cover on the left side.

According to service manual is 12 steps process and requires complete disassemble of boot compartment... however you can reach it by simply undoing few screws and carefully bending the inner cover (it is flexible plastic) - you need to be careful not to brake it and probably use some acrobatics to reach the module, but that is better than disassembling half of the car.

otherwise you can find all 12 steps here: CEwcu.pdf
