Hi

I'm told the tpms batteries in the sensors are all dead and it's £360 to get them coded and fitted. This sounds very expensive to me considering I have seen sensors for £25 each, unless Lexus use special ones. What's the going rate for a job like this?

I think Richard found a garage in Northants/Leics that replaced/coded a sensor for around £50.

I recently had one done by a mobile fitter at close to double that 😕

The OEM units are Pacific but different replacements can be fitted.

When a sensor is replaced, all the sensors need to be read and uploaded to the ECU.

With careful digging into the sealant around the Battery of the TPMS sender in the wheels it is possible to remove the old dud Battery and solder in a new one. The unit can then be re-sealed using body filler, silicon, or epoxy resin.

This brings the cost of replacement down to around £1 per sensor with no registering in the ECU. Standard rubber valves can be fitted while this work is being carried out if required.

I've seen sensors on eBay all 4 for £135, non genuine but ones that can be coded, then surely it's cause of coding the sensors to the car? Is something any garage can do or do I need a specialist?

Each sensor has it's own individual code. This code is written on the sensor, and has to be entered into the TPMS ECU memory so that it can read that sensor. Without such a system, with all new cars requiring TPMS parking next car or even driving alongside could confuse the ECU.

Thought all cars had to have a tyre pressure warning system of some sort and TPWS, a software system that uses data from the ABS sensors, monitoring wheel rotational speeds, is the more common and cheapest interpretation? No RF data transmitted in that system

Cars manufactured after 01/11/2014 require a TPMS to be fitted at the factory under EU regulations. There are systems that use wheel speed to trigger a puncture warning called iTpms "independent tyre pressure monitoring system" , but these are not considered as accurate or reliable when signaling a low pressure tyre within the regulation levels. Going through a puddle of water on a warm day can give alarms along with tyres from different manufacturers having different rolling circumference even for the same size tyre.

The system using a sensor within the wheel is called a dTPMS "direct tyre pressure monitoring system" can not only give actual tyre pressure, but tyre temperature as well. This gives the ability to protect against all the tyres on a vehicle being under or over inflated to the same level from a faulty inflation gauge.

Get you local tyre place to fit them and then program them with Techstream. Don't forget to note the numbers on them before fitting because you'll need them for programming.

If you've not got Techstream, get it because it can save you a small fortune.

Can you code in new sensors with tech stream then? How much tech stream cost? Might have to buy a laptop and it if useful...

There's different versions of Techstream available on eBay, check before you buy.

Thanks John. Regards techstream, what version am I after for tpms and in terms of cost v benefit. Would rather get a better one for bit more money if it can do lots more etc and not a clue of the differences etc.

Right a little update, I took the car to another garage and had a few items attended to. Only needed 1 tpms, had a couple tyres, and some other sundries. Was told to drive the car for 20 mins, and light would go out, however this has not happened.

The car had a full diagnostic, was shown the results, nothing wrong with tpms. Does anybody know the correct initialization procedure? I looked at the manual but I don't think it was clear.

Have you got the serial number off the new sensor. The cars computer will only monitor known sensors, otherwise it would pickup the car next to you at traffic lights with a flat tyre.

You then have to initialise the new sensor with TechStream.

Took the car to the garage and the following codes came up on diagnostic;

C2123 Cannot receive data from the transmitter id3 (main)

C2177 Initialization un-completing

I think I will just get the remaining 3 sensors replaced, and be done with it, the wheels that is, not the car!

Also, is it intuitive on how to find and get to the sensor bit? As got to get this flashing lights gone, think it's burning a hole in the back of my eye! It's so anoying
