2009 148bhp 220d, 100k miles, regularly sertviced, commute is a mix of motorway and grind, 40 - 60 minutes depending upon the amount of grind, average mpg 44

went to a wedding using predomnantly motorways for a 90 mile journey averagibg 47mpg on a hot day for the UK (26 dgrees C)

on the way home, two orange warning lights came on, the bottom left hand.light for multiple engine warnings and the bottom right hand light for slippery traction wihout any other warning signs or messages. The car progressively slowed thorugh a 60 mph limp home mode, through 50mph to a 40 mph limp home mode.

Recovery truck diagnostics suggested it was a problem with the dpf, which as i understand it, should have been fairly clear given the amount and type of mileage the car normally does - does anyone know hat might have happened and how to fix it?thanks in anticipation

Unfortunately, blocked DPF's are fairly common these days.

I had it happen to mine once.

You are right in that motorways miles should help the situation, but as journeys rack up it can still become something of a problem unless all your mileage is on the motorway.  It also depends on the revs used during the motorway trips, for example, I tend to keep mine in 5th at 70mph, which gives me roughly 2200rpm.

What should happen is that, once in a while, the ECU detects the DPF reaching its threshold for blockage and performs a forced regen.  This usually involves dumping extra fuel down the exhaust to heat the DPF up and burn the excess carbon off.  Sometimes though, it can go a little wrong and you get the warnings like yours produced.

What is its current state?

In the first instance, a good blast up the motorway should help.  Something like keeping it above 2500rpm for roughly 15 minutes.

Second, it is possible to manually activate the cars forced gen procedure, but you would need a copy of Toyota's TechStream software to do it (or a visit to a main dealer or specialist).

Unfortunately, the third option is replacement, which isn't cheap.

Lastly, are you sure your car is 148hp?  I was under the impression that only 200d's were 148hp, and all 220d were 175hp?

Odds on it's EGR...about an hour DIY plenty of advice here already on how to do it....when finished disconnect Battery say 10 mins just to clear down the warnings....then reset all four windows individually...(all the way down and all the way back up again with their own door switch (not all four on drivers door)...you'll have it done easy...if you have some carb cleaner it will help but not a must.

Good point Paul.

I might have misread since having re-read the post it does say it is suggested, but not confirmed, by the recovery people that it is the DPF.

A reading of the fault codes should pinpoint the problem easily enough.

A 2009 is220d will certainly be the 175bhp. I think 2010 and later got detuned to 148bhp and rebadged is200d.

I also had a blocked dpf on my previous is220d despite plenty of spirited driving and using bp ultimate diesel.

I took mine to lexus bristol who performed a force regen and cleaned the egr valve as well.

Certainly not cheap but the car ran fine for the remaining few weeks I kept it for.

Forced regen would fix it but should only be about £70.

I would definitely recommend this too. I had Terraclean carred out and helped a lot but didn't fix completely. Issue arose again after a couple of weeks. Had it in for a service with Lexus and they said they would recommend the forced regen. They ran it twice and it has been perfect ever since. On top of that, they told me to run the car between 2,750 and 3,000 rpm for 10km uninterrupted without using cruise control every tank. I have given up on 5th gear too on their recommendation. There hasn't been a hiccup since (5,000 miles or so).

On my is220d dpf blocked on m25 went into limp mode lights came on had my dpf cleaned by car surgeon in Birmingham cost 350ish pick up and drop off second time happened I used wynes dpf cleaner and was cleared.

1)Try adding wynes dpf cleaner and take it on motorway for about 20 mins in 4 th gear, if it clears it disconnect Battery and lights should go off

2) clean egr should take 1 hr of ur time good video on utube step by step on cleaning egr

Hi Shahpor,

Do you know how to manually activate the car forced dpf regen? I have just bought the OBDII cable and the TechStream software.

I can't actually remember where the menu is and I don't have my copy to hand to check.

However, this post should give you an idea what to do:

So it seems you need to go to the Active Test Menu, and it should be available from there.

Let me know if you get stuck and I investigate further.
