I bought a GS450h in a private sale recently, just less than 10 years old.  I bought the warranty over the phone, they didn't ask to inspect it although I did book a service at the same time, I am currently having some work done under warranty which was picked up during the service.

By the way, I believe the car you are looking at would fall into the essential servicing schedule for cars over 5 years old, fairly reasonable on price, £225 for a minor service and £425 for a major one.

I would recommend having a drive of a 450h in addition to the 250 F you are looking at.....

The IS300h is only RWD and yes, whilst the quality in the IS300h is good, the GS is undoubtedly better as its supposed to be in the class above

The reason for the GS250 being in short supply is that they were only available for a limited time but mainly down to the fuel economy and tax rates. Therefore, business users were more likely to go for the GS450h. Also being a petrol engine in a large car, it does need to be revved quite hard to get it to go whereas diesels tend to have a more laid back, lazy character which everyone is pretty much used to now.

Before I bought my 2012 RX450H, I was actually going to order the GS250 F-Sport in Arctic Pearl with red leather, ML and sunroof. I believe the list price was £42k but they offered me it for £37k as they were having trouble shifting units (and this was in August 2012, I believe the GS250 came out in March time)
