What are some of the signs that you have a bad fuel pump?

exactly what i just said.... what are some symptons of a bad or not working correctly fuel pump?

1) A man running after your car waving a fuel pump in his hand just before the car stops,

2) the car doesn't start,

3) the engine stutters,

4) the fuel tank never empties,

5) the fuel tank empties whilst sitting on the driveway,

6) the engine backfires,

7) the car stalls,

8) the car runs unevenly,

etc. etc.

there are a million differenct symptoms DEPENDING ON WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE FUEL PUMP.

Your question is backwards. It's like going to the doctor and saying what's the symptoms of a bad liver. He doesn't know whether you mean sclerosis of the liver or cancer of the liver etc. etc.

So he gives you the symptoms of sclerosis of the liver and you say: "Hmmm! No that's not what I've got. What other Liver diseases do you know of"

Ten years later after he's gone through every single liver complaint he can think of. You suddenly die of a heart attack.

You may as well ask "What are some of the symptoms of a bad car?"

probably means a noisey pump...

he has problems trying to start to car from cold, it usually took 10-20 swings of the starter. after replacing the fuel filter, it only took 3-4 swings. but still wouldn't start first time. so he was asking for help.

we chatted at some length on AIM and he tried a trick to remove the petrol filler cap when he switched off, then leave it off til he re-started it some five hours later. it started first time.

i'm now waiting for him to get to work to see if it did the trick last night as well.

if it did, then i'm thinking a faulty one-way valve in the fuel line (if there is one) or a faulty breather into the fuel tank (if there is one). now we've isolated why it won't start, what's the cure?
