Car Insurance

Just been getting online car insurance quotes for this year's insurance renewal, and notice some sites have a list of what "mods" have been applied to your car... :mat:

These include:

- Supercharge

- Alloy wheels

- Painted brake disc callipers!!! - WDF? :tsktsk:

What does everyone declare in terms of "has your car been modified beyond the original manufacturer" bit?

I declare everything and let them decide what's important

Clear fog lights - no impact

Painted calipers - no impact

alloys - higher excess with previous insurer, higher premium with current insurer

Lowering springs - previous insurer wouldn't cover car with these on, higher premium with current insurer

Drilled/Slotted front discs - no impact

Tinted windows - can't remember if this affected premium or not.

It does seem very pedantic I know, but the definition of "modifed" to insurance co's means any modification made to the vehicle as standard, so to give some examples:

Not modified:

A new car fitted with Lexus styling kit and 18" alloys

Dealer fitted optional extras (sat nav, reversing sensors etc)

Modified:

Aftermarket styling kit

Aftermarket alloys

Exhaust

Suspension

Induction....

....and just about anything else, however trivial

If in doubt, tell them

Like the guys above said declare everything and if you do it over the phone write down the date, exact time on the start of the call, name of the person you spoke to and what mods you declared. They record all calls so if you have a dispute over exactly what was declared ask them to produce the recording of the call.

Sounds a bit extreme I know but it may pay to cover your a**e one day.

My Insurance co. stated that the Styling Kit + alloys WAS a modification as there is no specific model in the range - it is an add on. Still, at £330 a year in total, who's complaining...
