Exhaust Noise - Decibels

Recommended Posts

Is there a legal limit, or a noise pollution limit that applies to exhausts?

I'm thinking in terms of say Construction and Use, Council Noise Pollution or just ordinary PC Plod?

I'm asking for a buddy on another forum who has loud pipes on a classic car. I know there are rules to do with modifying the exhaust system on a new car to make it louder ( 6 inch nails in the back box ) but are there any hard and fast rules with decibels anywhere?

There are no specified limits - it's all very subjective. To give an idea, my IS is 85dB @ 2m and the Tubby is 90 dB (which sets off car alarms)

Not surprised 90dB is called "the second action level" of the Noise at Work Regs, your employer has to provide ear defenders and you have to wear them :crying:

To give an idea of scale the Tubby is nearly 4 times louder than the IS.
