Replacement / Additional Key

Recommended Posts

Hi, I collected my IS300 earlier this week, and it came with 1 Master ket and 1 Valet key. Now from what I understand, if I loose the Master, I am screwed in terms of getting another cut. With this in mind, it would seem sensible to get an additional, spare master key. Seems like a good idea until you pop into Leeds Lexus and they suggest around £180 for a new key.

So, what is the best route to get a new key? There are obviously loads of eBay sellers selling the shells and blades, but I guess it is the electronics that are the expensive bit. Are they the same as any widely available European Toyota's, such as the Avensis, which appears to use a similar key head?

Any other ideas?

Thanks for your help!

get a blank key from eBay - make sure it is the correct length as other lexus keys are longer.. then look for a cut key with the electronics in it - they sell quite cheap then swap the electronics over and re programme it yourself

This is what I have done to make a spare key, but my blank shell blade and cut key are stuck in the post- due to the recent royal mail strikes...

I got a quote from Lexus Teesside for 225 for a 3 button master key, i went the eBay route, got a uncut key shell for £9.99 delivered, won a bid for a 3 button key with a transponder already cut and swapped the innards, cost £12.99 delivered. I programmed the lock / unlock and boot release just to test the transponder unit worked, then to do the second set of programming i had to get the key cut.

Now this was an experiance as specialist car key cutting places were quoting me between £35 and £50 to cut the key, The Teesside branch of Timpsons said they would not do it. I visited another Timpsons branch and they said they would but as it was not their key shell they could not guarantee and would charge a fiver, had it done and when i went to pay for it the nice chap said as he could not gurantee it and he knew i bought the key shell new, he did not charge me!! anyway key worked in the ignition, would not start of course as i had to program it, did this no problem and it worked perfectly, only thing i didthat was not quite right was purchase a slighly longer key blade shell as stated in previous posts, but it works perfectly, total cost under £25 as i needed to replace the Battery too, as the original was dying. I use the key every day, put the other one away, saved myself around £200...who needs the dealers :shifty:

Hey Guys,

I only have one key for my car now as I lost one, luckily I still have the master. But could someone please tell me if the innards from any other lexus key will do for making a spare as the IS200 keys with the innards are not available on eBay. I have no problem finding a shell for it but getting one with the electronics in it is a bit trickier.

Cheers in advance!!

I think so long as it looks the same, and is from a European car (US different frequencies), you should be fine. At least that was the policy I used when I bought mine.

FYI for anyone in S. Yorks, H Harrold & Sons in Sheffield cut my key for £10.
