Gearbox Problem

Hi all

My 2001 GS 430 has a problem, when the car is hot and I pull away from a standing start the car hesitates for a second and then drives away. No problems once the car moves away just when you pull away and some days it will be ok even when hot and other days it is a pain all day once hot.

This problem does not occur when the car is cold, and does not appear to be a misfire.

My Lexus garage put it on the computer and found no problem so they drove it up the road on the computer. They have told me that the problem is the car sometimes pulls away in 2nd gear instead of 1st hence the hesitation.

Their solution replace gearbox € 7,900 :crying:

Has anyone had the same problem, fixed this problem or any other suggestions on how to fix this please?????

I am wondering if this could only be an electrical/sensor problem as the gearbox is ok apart from this one thing.

Any help or advice would be great please

Thanks

If I put my GS in manual mode, it only goes down to second gear anyway.... ???

I would have imagined that any problem would have shown up on the fault code reader..

and if they have found out that it's not going into first etc... then they (as a Lexus dealer) should know what the cause is, and how to fix it.

on a slightly different note, (and sorry for the hijack)

My car is very slow on pickup when the engine is cold... and to get it moving, you have to press the accelerator quite a lot..

within a few minutes it's fine and dandy...

I presume this is normal, so the gearbox/engine is not stressed when starting from cold...... or is it?

John

the only sugestion i can give is take it to an independent auto box specialist and get another opinion , most garages even main dealers would send an auto box away for repair , seems yours just wants to put in a new one to make a few quid . plus i think you are right about it being an electrical fault .

Yes I got the feeling that because it's Monaco they just wanted to put a new box in.

The problem over here is the Lexus franchaise has only been in France since 2001, so not many people around who know much about them only the dealers.

Might have to bring the car over to the UK for another opinon.

Also since the dealer plugged the computer in 3 days ago the box has been behaving but we have had cold wet weather and so the box has not been as warm as usual, but will keep fingers crossed.

when was the atf fluid last changed ?

hopefully never. However it's worth checking the level and that it is still nice and pink in colour.

I doubt may Lexus dealers in the UK has any 5 speed auto experience, they are very reliable.

I would suggest posting on the US forum, or even some of the other US Lexus forums, as there are many more GS430 owners there.

Fluid is the correct colour and the level is good.

Still no problem since it has been on the computer looking for the fault but still crappy weather here so maybe not getting warm enough yet, but fingers crossed it has gone away if they reset it

I have something similar. My car is IS 200SE auto. It happens in reverse for me. Fine when starting from cold. Problem seems to appear after driving for 20-30 mins. The stick moves into reverse, but it's as if it's not engaging - the car doesn't move. Again sometimes it's fine, other times I have to sit and wait a while or move it in and out of D and R. The car has only got 72k onn the clock. Changed the fluid recently which I was told was dirty but has had no effect.

Any suggestions?

Hi guy's,

Well the hot weather is here (30c) and the hesitation has got worse than ever.

It has been doing it sometimes during the cold weather but has got a real pain now the temp has increased.

It now hesitates when pulling away missing once or sometimes 3 or 5 times before pulling away, it also does it at 20kmh, 30kmh and has even done it at 50 and 60 kmh.

What actually happens is when the throttle pedal is just lightly pushed the car misses hence the higher speeds and it has even done this best discribed as a judder/misfire 5 times at 50 kph while driving along.

It appears to me that this happens when the throttle is just touched and then it hesitates then smoothly pulls away.

It does this uphill, downhill, from a standing start, while rolling slowly and while driving along between 15-40kmh when very lightly accerlerating.

It is fine when the car is cold with no problems and then after about 30-45 mins it then starts to play up. If the car is not driven for about 4-5 hours it is fine untill it gets hot and the fun starts again.

Has anyone had this sort of problem on a GS? I have my thoughts on what I think it could be but would welcome other opinons/thougths???

Hi,

My GS (300, 2002) has a bit of trouble in the cold weather when it's first started pulling away in drive, as if there is a bit of slippage in 1st but it goes away after about a quarter of a mile.

I've experienced what you are having a couple of times too, but I couldn't tell you what the weather was like. I put my foot on the throttle to pull out of a junction and didn't get anything for around a second, then the car suddenly jerked into motion.

Normally it's fine though. My GS has done about 93k.

Have you tried driving with the PWR switch turned on? I'm not sure if it will make any difference, but it's worth a shot.

Adam.

just read this thread, and from a fresh point of view, sounds like a maf problem

lexus's solution may not solve the problem. the ecu is telling them its starting off in 2nd, but not why. if the problem was before the signal reached the gear box, the new gear box would start in 2nd anyway.

my gs300 flies from a standing start, hot or cold(ish)

stick the car in "L" and see how she pulls, should be very strong. if you cant select "L"(1st gear) then you know its the gear box

(do this once the car starts giving you trouble)
