Car Selling Advice And Help

Just done a little digging - Anees - Do you know if the money was paid in as a Cheque/Bankers Draft or Cash.

Apparently, if its a Cheque or Bankers draft - the money will look as if its in your account - however, Banks will only guarantee after a period of 6 days.

If either is found to be a forgery or stolen before that time - the bank will request the money back from you.

Looking at all the scams for car buying - most of them involve the following;

A foreign element

Person offering you more than the cars value to cover "shipping" (yes usually abroad but there is still this element here)

Meeting away from their own address

I'm possibly being over paranoid about this but I just dont want to see a post from you next week on the forum saying you've lost all the money for the car and wasted your (and a friends) day travelling.

I would walk away......

Edit after post:

Also - Under no circumstances pay the moeny (transfer etc) for the deposit back to them before at least 6 working days have past - That could be another well known scam - You possibly getting a call/email before saying they have changed their mind and can they have the money back - You then find out afterwards the original transfer was a forgery and the bank takes it back.

Appreciate your time looking into this for me Mark! Really great to have such support available on LOC :)

She told me she paid in cash. What I did was give her the bank details of an account I rarely use that has a nominal amount in it. As soon as she paid me the money, I did a transfer to my main account (which is with the same bank, so virtually instant transfer) and today the balance has been updated on my main account to show the £500, so I do think it was cash she paid in.

i would ask your bank to look at the transaction code that applies to the deposit. that will determine how the funds were deposited.

Mark w is correct that some chq's and drafts will appear as cash but there is a unique identifier for each transaction that will be visible at the bank end..

(I used to work in a bank)

the banks do have the right to withdraw the amount if it was a chq or draft and turns out to be fradulant or stolen.

Your bank would allow you to transfer the money out but if they do reverse then that account will become overdrawn and they will seek to recover this.

I would do the quick check with your bank in the morning as it will confirm if the buyer has lied or telling the truth and will at least settle some nerves if it was cash if it was anyother way then i would walk away as the buyer has lied..

This is better than a Soap!

My partner Carole came up with yet ANOTHER twist!

Is this a "double scam"? Really, Anees has no friends so is running up this big sob story to get attention -and later contributions to his fund! But that is just being silly! :crybaby:

Bags I get to sell this to Hollywood first! :shifty:

PMSL!! Now that could be a movie? Maybe call it "Anees No Mates" :P

@Chris Skelton - really appreciate your offer on an LS400 escort, but couldn't ask you to drive 50 miles out of your way. Thank you anyway however. :)

Went to the bank today at lunchtime and got them to check the transaction code. Since the money was paid in at another branch they can not confirm 100%, but they are 99% sure that the deposit must have been paid in cash because it wouldn't have shown up in my account the same day (paid in at 0956 on Tuesday) and been available for transfer (Transfered 1738 on Tuesday into my main account). Cheques/bankers drafts usually take at least a day before they show up.

I also rang Elga again last night just to go through things again. I told her I would be getting a lift from a "group of friends" and she said that was fantastic and seemed genuinely pleased I didn't have to get the train home. She will be in a a Red Renault Scenic belonging to her partner. She is also going to email me her home address because I told her I wanted to give her a printed receipt.

What is actually happening is that a LOC forum member (called Gord - you might of heard of him, never gets banned and never argues and has great instincts about stuff like this :whistling:) has kindly offered to drive my BMW diesel down, with me driving the Yaris. His 4.2L V8 Audi wouldn't have made much sense economy wise. Its a 512mile round trip that I hope to complete on one tank of diesel. :D

Because Gord is working Friday night till late, we are going Sunday morning at 6.45am. I have also got one of those pens to check the money is legit.

I was also talking to my mum last night and she said that the way Elga is buying a car is exactly how she would do it if the car was far away! She also confessed that despite driving since 1976 she has never test driven a car! There must be people like that then.............

Were they also willing to cover you for 99% of the money if it indeed turned out to be a forged cheque or bankers draft?

Surely all it takes is a call to the branch the money was paid into? Guess they couldnt be bothered.

Sorry - still not convinced - but I'm going to drop the whole thing now - You've satisified yourself that all is ok.

Good luck.

Yes, hundreds of Yaris but only 69 Yaris Versos on the whole of Autotrader last time I checked and ours is amongst the cheapest.

This is turning into a right old meet!! :P

*imagines sweet little old lady/cunning scammer (delete as applicable) standing on corner, seeing a convoy of Lexuses sweeping into view*

"But I only wanted to buy one car ..."

I was thinking more along the lines of 'old lady standing on corner seeing convoy of Lexi(?) sweeping into view - she thinks 'I really must ask my doctor to change the dose of this medication' '!!

I agree with Purvesh....
