Wim Questions.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, first off let me say I would love to visit WIM and get my car's geo sorted, there are no obvious issues with my cars handling, however having seen the many forum members here that love Tony's work I feel compelled to get my IS200 checked out.

My question is much will it cost to have my car WIM'd? The big issue here is I'm soooo far away it would cost a fortune to get to Tony. My other question is what are the details of the geo settings for the IS200 SE, I figured some knowledgable sole may know here. Locally where I live there is a good indie specialist car mechanic, he ususally deals in Porsche, Ferrari and Lambo but I was thinkig if I sourced the correct Geometery settings I could supply him with them and trust him to do a good job. Although if WIM is cheap enough I may end up making the long drive, what do you guys think?

Thanks in advance guys! :winky:

You will be able to get the geo settings from Tony, if you can find someone decent in your area who can do the job. There are complications like the fact that in theory the IS200 isn't adjustable for one of the things that needs setting, but there's something else that can be adjusted which as a side-effect *will* make the necessary adjustment. So it's not that simple, but someone competent should be able to do it. Hopefully there will be someone on here who can recommend someone near you.

For WIM's work you're looking at very roughly £100 for the geo setup. Obviously Tony could confirm the actual price.

I think a lot of it is the fact that Tony uses a (Hunter Hawkeye 811) pro wheel alignment machine which gives spot on 4 wheel alignment - covering all aspects of the geometry set up needed where as a lot of other places say they do 4 wheel alignment but it tends to be on an inferior machine/set up. If there is someone near you with a decent machine then you can get the settings then they should be able to do it for you.

Thanks for your replies so far guys, as always very fast and helpful.

My other question is would using a lexus dealership be an option, do they have a reputation for doing this job well? I know it may cost more but because of the distance invovled in getting to Tony but if it's not too much it's an option. Ultimately though I want the job done well, that's much more important.

Janey's point about needing to have decent equipment is a good one. If you do get it done somewhere else, then they should be able to give you a printout of how they've set your car up, then I'm sure you'd be able to ask Tony to double-check that it's indeed correct.

If you can make the trip to WIM, you won't regret it, they've very professional. But I realise it's quite some way. However, other LOC members have travelled a lot farther just for a WIM visit, they thought it was that worthwhile !

Also, having the correct equipment is no good if you have a monkey operating it - I know of 2 places local to me that have the same Hunter Hawkeye equipment as Tony (1 in derby, 1 in Hinckley) and having used them in the past I know they dont do the job - and thats a standard setup for a GS.

There are only 2 places in the country I currently trust - and WIM is the closest one for you.

I will have to get mine re-done due to the engine change and it will be Tony at WIM eventhough there is a place in Milton Keynes with the same equipment and access to the same settings. I want my car to be as near perfect as possible, so only the best for me!!

BUT if there is someone nearer you with the equipment and they are willing to do the job to Ton'y settings then go for it, they are not cheap bits of equipment so the operator you would have thought will be good enough to interperate Tony's settings. Ask tony if he knows anyone near you? Get a quote and I bet tony's is better!!

Lexus used to charge about £130 for 4 wheel alignment, that is if they had or had access to a machine. Unfortunately they adjust it to Lexus ranges and not the ones Tony at WIM has produced with a lot of hard work. Also, as already stated, if a particular one of the readings is out Lexus have no way to adjust it.

Hey guys thanks for your replies, as I thought I'll bite the bullet and make the trip. I wanted to anyway but as everyone has said it's a small price to pay to ensure the car has good geometery. Plus I've just bought a set of four Falken FK 452's and I want them to wear correctly, I don't think there was a problem with strange wear on my old tyres but they were missmatched some P7000 some dunlop and a michy.

:offtopic:

I have to say the Falken 452's are very good indeed so far I managed to get them at a local decent tyre supplier for £76 (£304 for the set, gone it seems are the days of money off for buying a set) each, fitted and balanced. I did have to double and triple check that they would fit the weights to the indide of the rims though. Ju7st for info I found them cheaper on camskill.co.uk at £254.60 for the set but, by the time you took into account fitting there was only £20 difference in buying locally. Plus no hanging around for the delivery and I didn't have to get rid of the old tyres myself. Just for your info guys!

Thanks again guys. :winky:

Bet you'd happily live in America mate :D

Makes me laugh in all the films when they decide to go somewhere and it ends up taking 7 hours plus just for a night out :D

Think the furthest I ever did was either the trip to Portsmouth from Derby which was for work or one day I went to see Besty and thought he was only an hour away - was more like 5
