Faint Whistling Noise From Rear Wheel/s

Recommended Posts

hi all, new to this forum, recently purchased an is200 sport (waited a long time to get one so want to keep her mint), only just noticed in the last week a very faint whistling noise from the rear wheel driver side area whilst cruising at 30 or so, and when you speed up it gets quicker so its a wheel bearing I think, im not a mechanic so this is a rough guess, is this a common fault etc???

thanks

I wouldn't say it's that common but it's likely to effect lexus cars of a certain age or mileage, my se is a 51 plate and has developed this symptom from the drivers side front but it was more than just the bearing and I need a whole hub assembly now. I hope it's not that for you but I'd get it checked out as soon as you can the longer this goes on the more potential damage I believe could occur.

Has anybody got any thoughts....

My Is has started making a whistling noise but I put it down to brakes. The noise seems to get worse as the car warms up and only kicks in at about 25-30 mph. At the slowest speed it seems like the something is catching at a certain point (i.e 'whistle' pause 'whistle' pause etc) obviously this gets faster the faster you drive until the noise seems constant.

I know I have an issue with warped discs (whether it's caused by a sticky caliper or not I need to investigate) so up to now I've put it down to this.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers

Could this not just be a bit of a sticky brake?

no i dont think so, i have applied the handbrake gently at bout 20 mph to see if there was any change in the noise but it remained the same, its goin into the garage in 2 days so hopefully i get it sorted and ill share the diagnosis when i get her back lol

unfixed as yet, mechanic says previous owner had new pads in but they are cheap pads and could be the cause of whistling noise, but im not too happy, thinkin of just biting the bullet and bringing her to lexus dealership but god knows how much that will cost

Mine does the same, noise coming from the driver's side. I tried to jack the car up and turned all the wheels however, can't hear any whistling at all and all the wheels are turning freely. It's annoying especially when the window is down.

The trouble is any noise in a car will travel making it very hard to locate....have you had a look at the door seals. at the rear.? sometimes if the rubber has perished or come loose it can cause a whistling noise.

Hi,Smokeybaz ,with reference to gently applying the hand brake , this will not elliminate a caliper dragging noise ,as the hand brake works with shoes on a separate inbuilt drum . I would guess a strip down and check of the caliper will cure it ; worked for me

hi all

this might sound daft and probably is knowing me , but are you sure the noise is comin from the wheel? like daz32 said its hard to locate noises when on the move particularly high pitched ones , iv noticed that my drivers side wing mirror whistles as i get to about 20mph and over , i think its the gap where it rotates when folding , i wondered what the heck it was at first but then i folded the mirror on the move and the noise changed (still whistled but the pitch changed) ,its probably a long shot but u never know.

Mine had an advisory note when I had MOT last year saying that exhaust gases leaking from the exhaust, don't exactly know where but that could be it. Have you guys checked your exhaust system?

mine was doing it after i put my freshly powder coated wheels back on yesterday , the disk surfaces had got a bit dirty cos the lexxy's been on axle stands for 2 weeks ,id washed it twice and painted my calipers ,so i sprayed some degreaser on them that i got with my paint caliper kit and the noise is gone , think there was some crap that managed to creep on the pads ,you could always try that baz.

sounds like this could be the case, i am leaving her into garage in a few days to get looked at proper, i told the guy to hold the car as long as it takes to fix the problem, so he better know his sh~t, its either this or the hub needs replaced, but im starting to think the cause may be a warped disk, because braking at high speed the car shudders slightly, it gonna be expensive im sure whatever it is, although, all this just because of a whistling noise, god damn it! i drove a micra for 5/6 years and not one problem (respect to the micra), and only owned this lexus 3 weeks (dream car) and starting to get irritated by this one noise, ill not give up on it just yet lol, it will take much more to pry this baby from my hands lol, i have noted everyones thoughts so my mechanic has an idea where to start (he shouldnt need this) but im keeping my fingers crossed it will get sorted and then ill let u all know the crack with it, and if it doesnt get fixed, its going to the dealership to get the works, wonder how much that will cost ?

def a bearing noise or as anwield mentioned a metallic whistle, not the exhaust, as the whistle will speed up if you go quicker, def the wheel/bearing area

yeah i have also determined its the front driverside making the noise now, and had it up on jack, and spun the wheel, the noise is there and very faint at slow revolutions, warped disk i think maybe for sure cuz previous owner had new pads on etc and the callipers seem to work fine, we will soon see

Any update on this, would it be warped disc's. I hear a the very same noise but not sure if it's front or rear. I also get a bad wobble from the wheel when i brake hard.

the wobble means there is a warped disc, i had the same shudder when i braked hard, so my mechanic had the discs skimmed and put new pads on (wanted good pads anyway)and the shudder has gone, after doing this and getting new pads put on the whistle is still there so this did not solve the whistle problem, going to take it to a toyota specialist and see if they can sort it out, someone mentioned on another forum it may be a complete new hub assembly which is needed, time will tell, ill keep u chaps posted
