Is 200 Flywheel - Please Help!

Clutchless

Hi all,

Got a problem with my IS200 2.0 sportcross and I’d really appreciate you help. My 53' plate manual has done 55,000 miles and has been main dealer serviced, and I’ve just been advised that it won’t be too long before I need a new clutch. This isn’t a huge surprise to me as I do have a habit of riding the clutch, and mostly drive around town.

What really shocked me though was when I learned that I would need to have the flywheel replaced at the same time, as the car sometimes ‘judders’ when it pulls away, and apparently this costs £900 (excl VAT) for the part alone, and the car’s current dual mass flywheel can’t be resurfaced...OUCH! A few questions if possible:

1) I’d have thought a flywheel would last way longer than 55k / 7 years, especially when a repair is not possible and the replacement cost is so high! Is this a common problem with this model?

2) If I change the clutch but leave the flywheel, what may / will happen and how long could / will it take to happen!!

3) Has anyone found a lower cost alternative that’s achievable for a non-mechanically minded person like myself

Many thanks in advance for your help

Hi Ormi

Apologies for the late reply, I've been away from my PC, but thanks for your advice.

Is the welding option something that any garage can do or does it have to be done by a specialist? Also, is it a temporary / emergency fix or a long-term one? After I posted the original message I had a further search on the web and found an old post where someone mentions importing a solid lightweight flywheel from Japan for £200 (ish), would this be a better / cheaper option (I've no idea how much the welding option would cost), and if so has anyone got any experience of importing & fitting one?

Many thanks again, cheers

John
