Good Question.

There is a very wide accepted practice that you do the tensioner and the idler and water pump at the same time.

I don't buy that.

"In 25 years of working for TOYOTA, I never replaced one because of it's broke, water pump yes, there is no need if it is not leaking" - the TOYOTA specialist said.

I am happy to pay £150 for the job. and keeping eyes on it every service or every 10K.

Hi This is certainly a good price for this job,how many miles had the belt done ? regarding the changing of the other items; I go along with the water pump if it does not leak ,is not noisy ,and has no play in the shaft .BUT how do you or the tech who changed the belt explain the belt damage if it was not caused by either the tensioner the idler or the alignment of both ? When I changed my belt at 57000 it looked perfect but i still changed the tensioner and idler as it had managed to jump 1 tooth .I would certainly keep an eye on it annually .

Hi,had mine changed at just over 55,500,belt looked in pretty good nick, also changed tensioner and idler, along with water pump. Its always better to be safe than sorry.Moveover cheap is not always best, best having it all done at once then you can be rest assured you have nothing to worry about.

Hi,

My is done 74060 yesterday. Yes you are right. I will not lose any sleep over the tensioner, idler or the water pump.

Will fix it when they are broken. The only reason I do the timing belt is it will be "behind economical repaired" if it went.

I wish there is a easier way to inspect the timing belt. How about make the cover transparent? he he
