Whining Noise Under Acceleration

Hello everyone! Please put my mind at rest! I just bought a 2005 is200SE, it has 46000 miles on the clock, full Lexus service history and the last full service was carried out in June 2011. When i accelerate in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a little in 4th gear there is a fairly high pitched whine which accends in pitch and volume as the RPM increases. The noise stops as soon as I take my foot off the gas to change gear and returns as soon as start to accelerate again. The noice only happens under acceleration and not while I maintain a steady speed. I have also noticed that if I'm in 4th, 5th, or 6th at slow speed (say between 20-50mph) and I accelerate, the whine is not noticable. Is this the normal sound of a 6 cylinder engine, i've only ever owned 4 cylinder cars, or have I got transmission problems? Please help!

Thank you, you've eased my mind, do love this car though!

Mines the same, have looked into getting it sorted but it's not a cheap thing to do.

1/ cost to remove and refit gearbox, say £200

2/ specialist cost to "run up" and replace parts in gearbox, say £500

3/ might as well fit new clutch kit at the same time, say £200

4/ check play in flywheel, if worn then dig deep for £1000

live with it or sell it!

And mine, not loud but just noticeable in 2nd, 3rd and 4th, but mostly in 2nd. Never got any worse in 70k of motoring so not particularly bothered. I'm going to change the box oil for REDLINE Synthetic Manual Transmission 90 MT90 soon, but I don't think it will get rid of the slight whine. At 80k though it's about due anyway.

Best thing I spent my money on on the car was a Grom iPod adapter - spend yours on that and don't worry about the gearbox, just turn the sounds up!

Mine whines and its an auto - 2004, 100k - only does it in 1st and 2nd gears at high revs but it has done this since i had it almost 3 years ago - not been a problem at all - sounds like a quiet whistle but sounds "cool" as if theres a charger on it - dont know if it can be heard outside of the cabin.
