New Mot Regulations Coming Soon

Recommended Posts

Just been reading that new MOT regs will mean that a warning light on your dash could mean a failure.

Introduced in January of this year there has been a transition period of 'grace' due to end this summer (date yet to be released).

I'm not saying that it's good to ignore any warning light, but from this year onwards, you will have no option.

An example given by one guy was his Ford Focus (sorry about the double F -word) was showing an ESC warning light. On this occasion it passed but was warned that next time it would not, assuming that the light was still showing.

The cost of a new unit £1740; value of his 2008 car - £4000.

Anyone know how to disconnect a dash bulb in a Ford Focus?! :innocent:

Removing bulbs will result in a fail because the tester is required to check that the warning light is functioning. I can't see why people are concerned about the additional items which are now subject to testing. If a warning light is showing then it is indicating a fault which means that it needs rectification.

regulations seem very unclear at the moment. From what I've read you will fail if there is a warning light related to safety, airbags, skid control, tyre pressure and ABS which has been part of the MOT for some time. In theory an engine check light shouldn't be part of the MOT however looking at other forums people seem to think any warning light will be a failure.

'Removing bulbs will result in a fail...'

That's what's known as a joke Dave.

If you look at the VOSA website you will see that it isn't a joke. If requisite warning lights do not light up in correct sequence it will be regarded as a fail item. Testers are required to check these items. Just check your warning lamps yourself when you turn on your ignition and you will see how easy it is for them to be tested and if the bulb is removed then it will obviously not illuminate when ignition is turned on.

Towbars and their associated electrical sockets are also now included, the towbar must be type approved with the required identification present.

The earlier type of trailer socket is tested for correct operation but the later type is a visual only check.

Speedometers must also be working but there is no accuracy test, the speedometer must also be lit so technically a bulb out may result in a fail.

MIL are required to function correctly. The tester isn't going to try to find why it isn't working, he should fail it once the advisory period ends.

As an mot tester i can tell people that the items mentioned are now testable but not yet failable. Which you must admit is stupid. Whats the point of testing an item if the result of that test make no diffrence. The date these items should have been failable has come and gone and there has been no date set to end this "bedding in period" as voso have called it.

As mentioned a warning light should function correctly which means it should come on then go out after a pre determind amount of time. If the light doesnt work this means the system is faulty. If the light comes on and stays on this means the system is faulty. The whole point of a warning light is to warn you of faulty system. E.G If your oil light doens work how are you going to know if you have no oil pressure. Your oil light wont be in the test by the way thats purely an example.

There is a number of other items that are now in the test. Dust covers for instance on ball joints. Torn ones now are a fail even if the joint is still very serviceable. I havnt yet found a supplier for dust covers so am currently changing compleate bottom arms on some cars for the sake of a 10 pence rubber cover. I have started to remove and save dust covers from worn joints i remove to use them to replace split covers on good joints. The average Audi has 3 front tie rods. All 3 are made from ally and are expensive to buy. The warnign lights are not the only thing thats going to force drivers of old cars of the road simple 10 pence dust covers could finish a car of.
