My Insurers Are ..... - Rant Coming Up....

Right, need a rant, and this is the best place to put it!

Basically, my insurers (like the rest of the insurance industry!) are complete :tsktsk: takers. Profiteering scum who's sole purpose in life is to rip off the hardworking consumer! I'm quite happy to name and shame - 1st Central are the rip off merchants in question!

And the reason for my rant - well, basically I called my insurers to tell them that my partner, who is named on my policy, is now my wife and had taken my surname so I needed to get it changed on my policy. 'there is a £30 admin charge for that' was the reply. I asked for a breakdown of the 'admin charge' as I thought it was excessive for only changing a surname. I was told that they were not obliged to give me a breakdown. 'so basically your ripping me off' I said! To add insult to injury she then said that my premium was going to go up from £39 a month to £50 a month because of the amendment to the policy. Now, hang on a minute, I thought when you got married things like your insurance were meant to come down!!!!

At this point I was fuming so after a heated discussion I said I wanted to cancel, only to be told that if I wanted to do that there would be a £50 charge and an additional £49 charge to 'set up' the cancelation!

So.... To 1st Central Insurance - you really are a bunch of thieves who think of nothing but the £ sign! The only reason I have not cancelled is because, like hundreds of others, I am in a catch 22 where you are going to rip me off whatever I do! I assure you, I will never ever take a policy out with your corrupt company again. I bet you charge your own staff a £30 admin charge to take a *****!!!!

Roll on renewal time

Rant over. (mods if this breaks any rules please remove)

Firstly congratulations on your recent marriage and I did get you to the church on time.

Yes insurance companies are getting worse, infact as bad as airlines with admin for this and that.

Have they not explained why the premium is increasing or are they hiding behind another smokescreen?

How about the Freedom of Information Act?

Hi Steve. I put up a post about the wedding here http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=78605&hl=

Have you seen it?

I did ask about the premium increase, the just fobbed me off and said its what the computer came up with not them. I swear our lives are slowly being taken over by computers and common sense takes a back seat. We soon won't be able to give an answer unless we've spoken to the computer first!!

No problem and thank you for the kind comments.

Consider it my wedding gift to you both, there is however a £30.00 administration charge and it's a good job you didn't cancel or there would also have been a £50.00 charge and £49.00 to set this up!

Until reading this thread I had never heard of 1st Central. They appear to have very mixed reviews, ranging from attrocious to excellent service. I have always found over the years that dealing direct with insurers has been better than dealing with brokers. Whilst I can fully see where you are coming from on this, the relevant charges must have been supplied to you when you took out insurance through them as brokers. Whilst there is no excuse for the attitude you felt they displayed you almost certainly made their attitude worse by getting "heated" with them. You will probably find that the insurance company with whom you are actually insured levies some, if not all, of these charges.

ALWAYS check the "small print" on everything so that you know in advance any potential extra charges which may be levied.

Very true and how many of us click on the "I accept the terms and conditions" box without reading the contents?

By reading this post you accept that you will pay Stee2006 the sum of £10.00, click here to accept.

  • 2 years later...

Very old thread I know, but some input is needed.

Keep in mind that when you talk to these companies, they have very little if any actual insurance expertise. They know what an excess is and that increasing it can bring your price down, etc... But, in reality, their training will have been orientated around using the system and a certain level of customer service (believe it or not).

They've probably had 2 weeks of training and then straight on the phones, nor do they get paid much. As a result, and quite frankly, they couldn't care less about how heated you get. It just adds to the 'I don't get paid enough to have to deal with this T**t' attitude. Additionally, they probably don't know why your price has gone up..computer says no! That's it. It'll be down to the technical underwriting team (who are never customer facing) to be able to explain to the person that you're talking to why the price has gone up. Unless you really push for an answer and know a thing or two about insurance, then you'll never find out.

In truth, there may have been a good reason for the increase, believe me, there are literally hundreds of aspects to an additional driver that an insurance company will look at. However, the admin fees are a joke and are getting worse and worse!

I used to be a personal lines insurance broker. A real one, not a call centre agent. I worked in a branch and needed specific qualifications to do my job and be able to underwrite policies. If you have any questions then PM me.

Just for the record, 1st Central are awful!
