Purpose Ambient Air Temp Sensor

Hi All,

I just wanted to know if any of you knows the purpose of the ambient air temperature sensor.

I don't own an IS, but I have an Mark2 with the same Beams 1G-FE engine.

And the ambient air temp sensor broke, so wanted to know if it could cause something to go wrong.

Not only does it display the ambient air temperature on the dash display giving you an indication of possible freezing road conditions it is also an input sensor for the climate control.

Knowing the outside air temperature means the climate control knows whether to select recirculate or fresh air dependent on the ambient temperature, if it is minus 12 outside and you set the cabin temperature at 22 you don't want to be drawing cold fresh air into the cabin.

A broken sensor won't cause a problem but it could confuse the climate control under some circumstances.
