Cd Multichanger Not Working

Recommended Posts

When I pickedup my is200 SportCross on the weekend, the garage said that the Multichanger wasn't working, but because it is a Lexus designed piece, they couldn't fix it. Also that Lexus had quoted £2000 for a replacement unit. It keeps on 'clicking' when you press the load button and then reverts back to the radio.

I've got her booked in at Lexus Cardiff next Wednesday to see if it can be repaired. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Stuart.

Likely to be a miss loaded cd that has jammed up in the trays. It will probably cost a packet to get Lexus to look at it and they will undoubtedly tell you to buy a new unit for £2000+. That's if one can be bought!

There are many strands on how to take the unit out if you are a little competent. If its a jammed cd it's easy to get out after you take the lid off the top of the unit. If its broken trays that are the problem then you could explore fleabay. Make sure you get the same type of head unit. Some have ext amps some don't. There is a 5 digit number near the cd slot 51903 for eg. Also check if its cd slot is at the top or the bottom of the unit. The bottom loaders were renowned for probs.

I did this myself with a second hand unit for £90 from fleabay. Still working now as my son has the old is200!

The 'click' that you refer to is when the laser cannot locate onto the CD, its the same with laptops/PC's etc. The unfortunate problem is that its usually the tracking device within the laser has come to the end of its life and will require changing. Lexus units in the older vehicles where manufactured by Pioneer and I would suggest rather than book into Lexus, you take it to a Car Audio specialist for less money or a free diagnosis! They can retro-fit a different multichanger into the boot and maybe still use the header unit. The GPS if fitted should be located under the floor in the boot well and is seperate to the audio CD. I haven't owned an IS, but have driven many since produced. I hope this may give you a new line of enquiries.

Buy Ians200's if the model numbers match and cancel the Lexus appointment. Lexus are gonna charge you £90 just to look at it plus repair on top and as Normski says they'll just try to flog you a knew one at stupid money!

Thank you, i'll check the codes now and let you know.

Cheers

Stuart.

Check here for how to remove the centre unit

http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/attachments/Radio%20Removal.doc

Its not that difficult...just take your time and don't lose your rag..gently gently catchee monkey!!

Make sure you put tape down the sides of the dash walls as they can be scratched quite easily when you lift the stereo out and you need to tilt it to unplug various connectors.

Dont take me literally on this ..but if i recall correctly you can put units with numbers 13903, 13905 and 13909 in the same car as I think they all have external amp. Avoid the type with CD slot at the base of the unit though.

Hopefully someone who has a car will confirm or shoot me down!!

Yeah your right Normski it's all to do with the external amp. The reason we say the codes must match is for 100% certainty it'll work. Pretty much the S model didn't have the external amp but the SE and Sport and Sportscross did but this isn't always the case 100% of the time. Also spot on about top/bottom loader. There's no way a bottom loader will work in an 04 IS but it's ok cos Ian's is a top loader :)

Had mine all taken out and had a decent kenwood with Ipod connection fitted. There is a cradle that the kenwood sits in that has a large slot underneath where you can put the ipod and phone etc.

Sold the old unit for £20 at a car boot!

That of course would be another option..fair play. Think he'd need an adaptor fly lead to connect it or go to a dedicated supplier/fitter and get them to do it for you.

was your amp bypassed?

Hi Chris, I've currently got a 13906 and Ian is selling a 13903, what's the difference? is the a radio spec sheet somewhere?

Think that is OK (typo on my post above should be 13906 not 13905).

Have you an amp tucked up LHS of your glove box? Attached to the bulkhead side.

Slide out the two bottom pins and the whole glove box will drop down to reveal all.

Hmmm now to be honest I have no idea if that'll work sorry! Your number doesn't even match one that Normski said would work so sorry but I don't know :(

As I said not all Sportscross had the externsl amp from what I've learnt on these forums. I know how to tell on a normal IS, it's by checking the parcel shelf speakers have 2 sets of wiring going to them or 1 set. Don't know how to check in a Sportscross fella

I think so, a silver box, Toyota 8628D?

Thanks Chris, you've been really helpful, as has Normski. I'm thinking that if my unit only has a faulty CD Changer, simply imstalling a replacement unit would not require any change of leads? as I'm not upgrading, simply replacing.

As far as i remember, there were 2 units removed? Amp and power unit? Was quite a lot of dashboard etc. that needed to be removed and the new cradle is a little fiddly when attaching to the heating control unit. Think additional cabling was also needed for the new head unit. My mate owns a car audio dealers so he did it all for me, luckily he did the same to another lexus a few weeks previous so he was well clued up on what was needed! Seems to be a lot of speakers in the boot, is the single one on the right a sub of some kind?

It may just be a misloaded disc. Mine would whirr and click, then found Boss's son admitted he fed a cd in before the lights wre green. Durrrgghhh!!

Took it out, removed the CD and bingo all was good.

Then my son did the same three times!!! By this time I could remove and refit the unit in 30 mins!!!! 10 of which were carefully removing the CD on the kitchen table.

Do need to take care when loading CD's. They need to be feed at a right angle (thats 90degs...not 'the' right angle...although that is of course the right angle...perhaps I should have said 'correct' angle-----need to go and lie down now!!!) to the Cd mouth or they go between the trays. Be warned.. take care.

Thank you. The CD Changer wasn't working when I purchased the car on Saturday. I may attempt to take the unit out and have a damn good look, otherwise, IanS200's offer of his unit for £90.00 looks very promising, though I could just buy his and attempt to fix mine and sell that on . . . ?

Also, if I change like for like, I may not need to worry about what lead does what, simply change the unit and return the leads to where they were?

Stuart.

Thats right stuart, easiest way.

Son has just come back to factory in his is200 sport. The player in his car is 13906 and he definitely has the external amp. I know, cos I've had the whole lot out before!!

So, if you have the ext amp you should be fine with the one you mentioned.

Do you get error message when you try to use the CD player. I had error 1 on mine when I first got it. My mate took it out, cleaned the lens and it's been perfect since. If you read about the error 3 message then that means its pretty much kaput!

No, pressing the load button, it beeps then wait CD message comes up on display. The moment you press the load button, it starts clicking like it's trying to pull in a CD. The click goes on a cycle (4 times) before no further displayed message, but the clicking stops and it reverts to the Radio.

I wounder if there is a CD stuck in there and when I get the unit out, i'll have a good look.

I've just purchased IanS200's 13903 and will have a good look at my one when I swap them.

Stuart.
