Time To Change The Timing Belt?

Recommended Posts

I asked just for labour, i had the parts. Its a 3 hour job quoted by autodata and thats pushing it. Ian said he did it himself in 3 hours and hes never done it before. £300 for labour is ridiculous when a good garage will charge £40 - £50 a hour

£40-50per hour?? Where do you live Pete? Cheapest I found was £70 per hour and that's a crappy little backstreet garage. Lexus Bristol are £90 per hour.

I,ve looked at the Lexus price promise but can find any quotes for post 2008 models,

do they not publish service costs etc on more recent/younger models?

the fixed price promise is intended for 5 year or older vehicles. It is a way of stopping owners of older vehicles going to independents.

I would use those prices as a basis to negotiate with your dealer for new vehicles.

Lexus Cardiff said that because of the age of the vehicle, 2004, their labour charges for me will always be £85 per hour. I get a further 5-7% reduction for being a Lexus Owners Club member. Yes it does cost more than a small independent, but then it's Lexus!?! Yes, the quality of work is likely to be the same wherever you go, but it's being done by Lexus!?!

I wonder what the equivalent charges are for post 2005 cars?

the new engines have timing chains which don't need replacing hence the N/A in the pricing matrix

They do need changing, just not as often and so are not regarded as a service item. The links and tensioners wear resulting in the EML warning light to come on...

Where do you live! back street garage round here more like £35ph. even the BMW specialist my Dad takes his ZT to is around £60ph i think he said, maybe less

Im in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. but i take mine to Telford to a well respected garage i know if it needs work either myself or my friend cant do. and the garage i know that charges £35ph is in Craven Arms which is in the middle of knowwhere. I knew prices varied depending on location but didnt know that much! mad

£100 an hour isn't too bad tbh. I work at an Audi garage and that's 95 an hour for normal cars 110 for RS models and 135 for q7s. But from what I can tell it is easy to do so would be aswell doing it yourself if you have a basic toolkit

Most jobs on an IS are a breeze compaired to working on a modern Audi.... The timing belt is a very straight forward job.
