So .. Tuesday I'm taking my 07 220d in for a new engine to be fitted ... Many thanks to Lexus Milton Keynes

Was just wondering if it's exactly the same or been modified ... As in will the head gasket eventually go on that as well

Any idea peeps

It wont be a new engine if they're doing what they did with mine. Its a rebuilt/recon engine that gets installed. They just did the main block on mine. Injectors etc were all as before.

Not sure if this helps but the engine wont be 'new'.

Equally...it could be a New engine withe modified Head. Mine had the modified Head put on. Otherwise you run the risk of the same problem occurring. I'd certainly expect the newer head to be put on as the original had some form of design flaw that LED to the head gasket blowing. Probably a water jacket wall being too thin. Apparently the head was making tiny scuff movements. Ormi put up some good photos showing the problem quite clearly. do a search and you'll find it.

  • 2 weeks later...

As I understand it, the early modifications reused the block and had a modified head/gasket fitted, but it didn't erdicate the problem - as there were other contributory factors that helped to cause the problem - in all cases and many modified cars had a reoccurance of the problem. I believe there are a few forum members that have suffered twice.

I have read a few responses from toyota/lexus mechanics(mainly on other forums) and they say that the scuffing on the top of the block, caused by the gasket moving, was sufficiently bad that the blocks do not seal properly after the modifcations were carried out......or something like that.

BB1000 - what symptoms did you have prior to it going in for the work and do you have full Lexus service history?

I ask, because a Lexus garage told me that they have to carry out a number of tests to ensure that Lexus UK will cover the replacement engine, and that l would probably have to have the car recovered to them on a couple of occassions to have the DPFs regenerated and other work completed. I don't believe that many owners on the forum have had to go through this process, or have they?

The symptoms i had was coolant being sprayed out the coolant reservoir and now and again white smoke from the exhaust ... that was getting worse day by day

Car was due the 70k service anyway and it was around the time i noticed the coolant be sprayed over the engine

I booked the car in for the 70k service ..... waited for the car to be done and after the service was carried out i was told the bad news of " your head gasket has gone and you'll need a new engine"

I had 4 Lexus service stamps and 2 non lexus service stamps ....after the service i had one more Lexus stamp

No tests before the service and never had the car recovered to the dealer ... I have only owned the car since last October

I did however take out the Lexus extended warranty the same day i booked the 70k service ... £66 a month for 20 months, that gives me 2 years cover BUT this had no effect on the new engine as i was told my car was within the age and mileage (7 years or 110K miles)

Well worth the money imo as the rear brake calipers were seized and was replaced at the same time as the new engine, they alone would have cost me over £600

Lexus Milton Keynes were spot on for customer service and can not fault them at all

I even had half a tank of diesel put in my car on collection day .... was almost empty when i dropped it off :D

I was also told that there will be no more head gasket issues with the engine .... that I HOPE is very true

Engine is smoother, more quiet and more responsive :D

Thanks for confirming that, as it is good to know.

I seem to recall that others were getting knocked back latterly if they didn't have full Lexus service history. I have 3 Lexus stamps, 1 Lexus specialist and 1 porsche specialist, but I will have the next one carried out a Lexus even though the precedent is very clear and hard for Lexus UK to argue.

Can I ask how your car drove until the coolant issue - any lumpiness in the rev range, or difference in performance/economy..... or did it drive o.k?

Good old Lexus MK - they are obviously very good, whereas a few others seem pretty dreadful!

Car drove fine tbh ... Mpg was going down though ... Now and again it did seem a little lumpy when going along at a constant speed ... The main thing was coolant everywhere in the engine bay ... Topping it up every day nearer the day of the engine swap
