Tried the pull the steering wheel out ..whilst I could pull it out and push it back....but the end result is that it refuses to work automatically.....so will live with it and have no desire to spend money to replace the motor...I am sure a good mechanic should be able to fix the motor...probably a rubber bushel or something .....

There is a u-tube clip that shows out to fix the inward outward steering mode of the Lexus LS430 and it is dead simple ,basically introducing a spacer made from a cable tie.

From what you are describing it sounds like a fix for your problem.

but....

I have seen the YouTube ...but sadly that one is for LS400... I was amazed what a a cable tie can do with a £55000 car.....

I have also seen pictures of a guy fixing the telescoping problem on an LS430 by replacing a rubber bushel ...

both of these are on the US lexus forum.

I am just not confident enough to try any of those...so for now I will stay with it and see what goes wrong next.
