Thanks for the update, and for the link - why can't Lexus just do a sensible price??

I've contacted people who sold me the car (only bought last month, so well within my rights) and just waiting for a response from them.

Your right you should be asking the seller to pay the bill, especially if its a trader as the Sale of Good act 1982 should help you!!

Unfortunately the price of genuine parts are based on what value it provides to the owner and is related to the initial value of the vehicle, not what it costs to manufacture.

For a low volume vehicles such as Lexus it doesn't make sense for Blueprint to 'tool up' and produce a pattern part so they have gone to the OEM to source a part. In this instance it seems Toyota have allowed this to happen, given that they are the majority shareholder in some of the Aisin companies, and hold around 30% of the whole Aisin group.

yes, or you could say, Lexus charge whatever they can get away with, simply because their customers can afford it.

Ouch :megaangry:

Got a call from the mech doing the water pump as he is fixing a ticking noise from my brakes as well and guess what. I have two seized calipers on the drivers front and rear.

£150 for water pump and service

£365 Parts for Front Disc & Pads and Caliper and Fixing kit - £45 Labour

Rear Caliper £185.24 + £30 labour (but I will but the part from Lexus Sheffield at £99)

£700 - Thanks Lexus :tsktsk:

I should too move to another car - As don't know when the calipers will seize again

One hours work once a year by you or mechanic to clean and grease the sliders = no further trouble!

Thanks John.

Will keep an eye on it from now on and include in yearly service to grease and inspect the calipers.

Just wasn't looking forward to this week before the school half term with the boys :(

In case anyone is still interested, I think that I have managed to find the formula for the pink coolant.

https://www.google.co.uk/patents/US6508951

It is a phosphate containing, nitrate containing, hybrid organic acid coolant, based on sebacic acid and 4-tertbutyl benzoic acid. Most coolant you buy in the UK is phosphate free and nitrate free and uses 2-ethylhexanoic acid.

That said, there should not be any major incompatibilities between this and a normal modern "universal" coolant or the toyota red coolant, other than concerns that the EHA can rot plastic and rubber (which is apparently the reason that CCI, the OEM for toyota, decided not to use it)

Regenerating this thread....

Had a noise on idle what sounds like a grinding bearing noise. With the bonnet lifted it is definitely coming from the water pump, though I have been lucky as no sign of coolant leaking or overheating yet.

I understand that AISIN make a lot of Toyota's parts. So armed with a 30% off code, I ordered an AISIN water pump from Euro Car Parts, total cost £77.69. Cheapest I can find a genuine Toyota one for is £125 from Lexus Birminghams eBay shop.

Pump arrived today and it looks like something has been etched out. I wonder if this was the Toyota emblem???....hmmmmm

Happy anyway, £77 vs £125. My local Toyota Specialist will fit for me at £45ph + coolant.

That said, I am still upset the original pump lasted just 62k.

You're right I should fit it myself. I used to everything myself on my cars, but lately as I've got older encountered too many issues and not having the correct tools etc etc.

Leaving the professionals to it from now on.

Agree. Attempted to change the oil in my old IS200 a few years back. The oil filter is tucked so far out of the way it had to go on a ramp or I had to get into a position I simply cant do nowadays. plus the specialist tool.  There's a time and place and I'd happily pay a garage for a job like a water pump.

44k!!??....there must be a design fault with the pump/bearing.

It is not only mileage but age as well. Mine lasted 112k miles, but it was because previous owner made such mileage in just over 6 years.

It's more that it is an easy and satisfying job. Only a socket set and a bucket needed! Not really about saving money (the quote above is great value) - I just enjoy doing these jobs!

Also check that new pump came with a new rubber gasket.

It should come with a couple of O-ring gaskets too.

Hmm, judging by the replies in this topic it would appear the pumps are prone to failing at around 60-70K or once 7-8 years old. I think I better anticipate having to change mine within the next couple of years.

That is some serious 'planning to plan' action going on there.:smile:
