Hello! I have a LEXUS IS 220d with a annoying problem and apparently no cure.

A while ago my car started to pull aut white smoke, this smoke comes
only under certain conditions: when the outside temperature is below 10
degrees; when the water begins to warm (the cold engine does not
smoke); when i drive in the town (low speed, traffic lights); when on
the highway the smoke disappears. The smoke comes with a strong smell of
burning fuell.

I tried various remedies proposed by dealer service stations including: i
have cleannd the EGR valve, I cleaned the pressure regulator, I
checked if I leaked antifreeze, oil, etc.. , I made a regeneration on
the DPF.

Besides the smoke, the car works perfectly, no lack of power, does not
give any error on tester, does not consume oil or other liquids in
addition to normal.

What should be the problem?

This occurs when i accelerate even at low speed and when i stay at triffic lights or stuck in traffic jam. I guess it happens more at high revs but at low speed. If i accelerate hard for a short distance and then i stop at a traffic light for example until it turns green i am covered in smoke.

From the video, it looks as though too much fuel is being delivered to the cylinders on acceleration and not all of it is burning. Could be faulty injectors or programming problem I guess.

Is your car by any chance a sport model. I use to have the same problem. My local dealer stated it was an over active injector and usually the fifth injector pumping extra fuel in. They gave me a specialist additive to put in with a full tank of fuel and it seems to have corrected the problem. You may have noticed as a result your fuel economy is rock bottom when doing short journey's on cold weather? The additive my dealer gave me I could not find anywhere and was told by them they put this additive in the tank during service. Hope this helps. Will try and dig out the name of additive.

I had the same problem with mine. There are two things that can be happening IMHO

1. The differential pressure sensor pipe is blocked. This happened to a toyota 2.2d owner and he got one of the tyre shops to blow air into the differential pressure pipes to open it. Because of this problem the car thought that DPF filter was always dirty and kept trying to clean it. The differential pressure sensor can be found inside the hood just behind the engine. Its bolted to the rear wall and two rubber pipes lead from it to the front and back of the dpf filter. The difference in pressure between the front and back of the dpf filter tells the ECU how badly blocked it is.

2. Or your dpf filter as actually partially blocked. They do get blocked to the point of no return, where no amount of dpf cleaning by fifth injector help. IN that case, try wyns dpf filter cleaner additive a few times and see if this help.

In worst case you may be looking for a new dpf filter.

For me, I just lived with this problem until I could sell the car. Was not a problem for me but I did feel bad for all the padistrians and cyclists outside.

I have the same problem with my car. When the engine is cold i have no problem, but when it reaches the optimal temp i find myseff covered in white smoke for a couple of seconds. This is happening when i drive in the city on short distances.

From what i read on the forum i understood that might be the 5th injector that is trying to clean the dpf filter.

I read somewhere in the forum that a few persons try a dpf cleaner and resolved the problem.

I will try as well to see what's happening.

If someone else can help with any other advice, that will be great.

Guys thanks for the advices ! I am glad that someone have am ideea about this problem, so far it was like an alien problem, every body heard about it but nobody knew how to resolve this.

I will take it by steps. To start with i will go and see what is with this differential pressure sensor pipe (by any chance the "differential pressure sensor pipe" is the same with "pressure regulator") it is blocked or not. Second i what to try the cleaner additive for the DPF that "Shepherd" recommended. Thirdly i whant to see if my injectors are working properly (i guess there is a method to check that).

Now i have some questions : how do you clean the dpf filter, is this a process that you can do it yourself or you have to go to the service ? How do i use this DPF ceaning additive, like a normal fuell additive, i put this in the tank with full diesel and i go for a long drive ?

I think if the DPF filter is partial blocked(witch i think is our problem) we can give it a try with this cleaner(i've just order it), but if it's totally gone we can only replace it, and i don't think is going to be cheap.

On the other hand i didn't heard till now about that pressure regulator. If someone can give us more information where is located(maybe a pic) and how we can clean it?

The next step is to clean the egr valve. I'm just curios. What MPG are you getting driving in town. I can't get more than 26 now.

As you probably guessed it i am from a country that is not a nativ english speaker, so i might be wrong about some tehnicall terms like the "pressure regulator", this is why I asked above if the "differential pressure sensor pipe" is the same with "pressure regulator". But i will take a look and make some pics to put here.

In other order of ideeas i have cleand the EGR valve. Now my MPG is between 18 to 20.

I have see the diagram and i guess that is not the same thing ("pressure regulator" - "differential pressure sensor pipe"). I will put some pics soon.

I made some pics. The first one i guess is the differential pressure sensor with the rubber pips, if that is true it means that the "pressure regulator" is somethung else, located between the engine block and the rear wall.

How can i cleen the sensor ? I have to go to the service or can i do it myself ?

The thing is that we don't know exactly which one is the pressure one. Do we need a high pressure air to blow or we can do it with a little compressor for tyres?

P.S. English is not my native language to. So i might have a weird way of speaking :)

Its easy, just take the rubber hoses off and blow high pressure air into it. use a nozzle adapter

Ok i will do that, but the rubber hoses go in some metal pipes, do i blow air in those pipes as well, or just in the hoses ?

Hi

OK here is step by step guide

1, Remove the two metal clips holding the rubber hoses in place

2. Loosen the rubber hoses off the plastic pipes on the sensor

3. Blow in to first pipe using mouth. If it looks blocked then blow air into it, use a fast pressure blower if possible. As it is attached to the metal pipe, you dont need to blow into metal pipe seperately

4. Do the same in other pipe

5. If you blow into both of them using mouth and both are open (not blocked) then this was not a blocked pipe problem for you.

6. Do not blow into/towards the sensor, blow only towards the DPF filter

Hy guys ! So i have done cleaning the rubber hoses and the problem is still there. No change whatsoever. What should i do next ? I am very stressed about this problem.

Thanks i will check it out.

I check all over the place but i didn`t find this additive, so i make a order on eBay, it will arive in 1 week.

Until then other suggestions ? I am open for everything.
