Noise In Idle

Hi. I have just bought a 58 plate IS220d with 68k mileage. There seems to be a slight scrapping noise in idle but when I press the clutch in, the sound goes away. I never noticed this during the test drive and 1st to 2nd seems very notchy for my liking.

Been reading a lot of the other topics but couldn't find an exact match to this problem. Extremely worried, please help anyone? Do you know what this could be?

Hi Ali,

I have an IS250 so I am not where near an expert on the IS220d, but this sounds like the Dual Mass Flywheel.

The fact it is making an noise in idle and the gears are a little notchy, implies to me that the DMF could be on the way out because it is an known issue.

If possible I would take it back to the seller and get them to either fix it or give you your money back. From reading similar threads on the forum if it is the DMF it is a very expensive fix.

Hopefully I am wrong and someone who has a IS220d can confirm this

Bobby

Hi.

It is definitely the Dual Mass Flywheel!

The symptoms are like this:

When the car is cold started, there is a small vibration (you need to pay close attention to notice it is there) until it has warmed up.

If you drive before the temperature gauge has moved of the lowest mark, gear changes are slightly notchy.

The fool proof test is to dip the clutch and if the noise goes away then you've had it as it's an expensive job.

From what you have told us, the Flywheel is a dud and I would say that you have 2 options:

1. Take the car back to the seller (only if it is a trader) and demand that they give you a refund on the full sale value of the vehicle, or that they repair the issue immediately (at an independent garage that you BOTH mutually agree to). Tell them that you are well aware that you have a minimum 3 months hold over them by law even if the Invoice states "sold as seen". Both Trading Standards and Citizens advice Bureau will confirm this.

2. Bite the bullet and get the work done yourself (if the seller was a private individual) and that will be the end of that....

similar sort of problem as my is200, if i even bearly touch the clutch or press the clutch in all the way the sound disappears.

does it sound like a mouse sqeaking constantly? if so i would say that its the clutch thrust bearing in the clutch. i.e new clutch. however i wouldnt suggest immediately worrying if it is the clutch thrust bearing as you could probably wait until the clutch goes all together as its still gonna be the same jobs worth repair so i am waiting until i cant physically drive it. i have been told that this will not cause any problem or damage to gearbox so i am happy to wait and save until i can afford to get it repaired.

see what other people think as im no expert.

i know that my squeaking, sqeel is the thrust bearing as i took mine to a family garage, ive been told sort it when i can afford it. i cant say the same for you but if you can go down the lines same as me might be worth a look at.

i know my repair is going to cost me a minimum of £300 inc labour costs etc. for the 220d ive read its in the regoin of £1000 just for clutch. seems to be a common problem across the forum and i wish you all the best in sorting it.

Thanks Kev and Dan for your response. I went to my usual mechanic and he assures me that its a bearing within the gear transmission. I did raise the question about the DMF and was told that it was a different sound altogether.

Been a pain trying to contact the private garage I bought it from. Lets see what happens and it doesn't help with them being over 90 miles away.

To be honest with you, if it was me in your position, I would pay a trip down to the Trader because they are obligated by law to put it right...

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Thanks guys for all your responses. I took the car back to the private dealer and they had it inspected by a transmission specialist. The result is a replacement of the release bearing and a new clutch. Just hope now it gets all sorted.
