you will need at least 8 litres, probably more to prime the flush machine. I doubt many places in the UK actually have auto transmission flush machines as manual transmissions are still the majority so you need to find a specialist.

The alternative is to disconnect the transmission cooler line, start the engine and let it pump out 0.5 a litre, stop, fill from the dipstick with 0.5 litre of fresh fluid and repeat until the fluid coming out of the cooler line is clean. You need to shift through all the gears to make sure all the valves are flushed through.

@colinbarber this seems do-able, where about is the cooler line and is it easy to get to once car is on jack stands? I heard of this way after reading through other posts over the weekend but wasn't sure how in depth it would be, is there like a guide on how to do this or basic instructions somewhere?

Quick update,

went down to gearbox specialist in Moseley today called Driver transmission, told them the symptoms so the chap test drove my car, took it around the block and he floored it quite a few times changed down and up the gears, told me he doesn't understand what the problem is as the car drives beautifully in his words?

I also showed him the oil and he goes it isn't bad, but is low, so he told me to top up the oil and also get it on a ramp and check if theres a leak in the gearbox oil from somewhere, except that he said all else is fine,

could it be low oil level causing the same issue and he said the oil isn't burnt or blacked out either so maybe its just to my noobish eyes ?

got a quite of 62.00 per 5L of Toyota type iv too

10 Litres would cover a flush with some left over which is always good to have. That was the colour of mine a redish brown which means plan a change soon ide say.

Funny he said it drove fine, im sure he knows what hes talking about

Ill check my service manual for ATF flush when im next on my PC for you

@petayv8 the videos a great idea, I noticed another thing, these issues only happen when car is warming up, once warm it drives fine, yesterday I went upto Manchester for my bday meal, once I got on the motorway it just came alive oh my was hitting 120 without even looking LOL

and once warm gear change up and down are smooth, and also doesn't come out of gear, when I checked oil level on sunday it was decent, today when he checked it , it damn looked empty :s

he did also say is200 has low power in lower revs but once you go over a certain rev the car is more alive, maybe that's why I feel like its not downchanging or upchanging ontime as the revs are steady at 2500 revs?

Funny you should say that. I also found the transmission was much better after i warmed up, say 20 or 30 mins of driving. In fact the whole car livened up on a longer run as i only used to commute 4 miles. I brought this up on the forum too but knowone seemed to know what i waz talking about. But i wouldnt go as far as saying it shifted badley before warm up and deffo never came out of gear

@petayv8 you must feel sane now, the guys on the forum probably made you think you going loopy mate lol,

I do think the coming out of gear could be lack of oil, I think im going to get 5 litres of Toyota oil and top It up, it will make a damn difference and I might drain the partial oil (2.3l) before topping it up? see if that makes a difference?

and hell yeah on the motorway it really comes alive, I really cant complain for a car that's 15 years old, still keeps up to a lot of metal out there :)

Personally ide buy the oil and pay someone to flush it to ensure they use the right oil. This would be the long term solution. Your way is a quick fix, by all means try it. and yeah its better than driving it how it is for sure. I mean i know these motors are classed as bangers now with the price n all but wouldnt effect me thats just me.

The sump is directly behind the engine oil sump further back

@petayv8 I understand bud, let me try the quick fix, and if it doesn't make a change then ill go for the full flush,

from the sump under the dipstick only 2.3l of oil will come out right? so I should only top up oil back to the level on the dipstick?

thanks

Here you go, this is what you need to do :) You could also do what colin suggested and disconnect the cooler and get as much out as pos

Dont use that oil though! lol

@petayv8 , I checked the dipstick today, oil level seems okay, problem is on the dipstick It doesn't show how much oil should be in there, I noticed the 2 edges on the dipstick, one on the lower part and one a litter higher on the dipstick? is the higher edge where the oil level should be?

and that guys hilarious lol, and no will not be using that oil, lol

@Clifton 94

thanks for your response bud, so just to confirm when the mechanic removes the sump off the transmission oil , the filter will easily come out? and he can just clean it and put it back?

and also just to confirm when the sump is removed only 2.4l of oil will come out? correct? as then I can top it up with fresh 5l of atf type 4 fluid.

cheers

just to confirm so the mechanic cant mess it up, the sump is below the dipstick to drain it, and the oil filler plug is also on the same side under the dipstick?

and is It true I can refill tranny oil from the tranny dipstick for auto gearbox?
