Buying An Is 220D Se Is It For Me?

Recommended Posts

Hi Gang,

I've just put a deposit down on a 2009 IS 220d SE Nav (56k FLSH), the car will be driven at least 25K a year (mostly m/way for my daily commute) and will need to pull my caravan probably 12 times a year. I went for the Lexus after owning Toyota's and in the belief that they were ultra reliable and would give me 4 years trouble free motoring. After NOW reading the forum pages I see this may not be the case. I intend to keep the Lexus service history .........................Have I made a bad choice??

thanks

Mitch

Well when I was looking for is, thought about the diesel only. It took me few weeks to read most of the threads about problems with those D-Cat engines. Almost everyone says stick with the petrol. So I did. But ur one has small mileage, wouldnt b too bad till u reach 100k i'd say.

At 25k a year that wont be long! But with that sort of mileage the petrol would cost a lot more to run. Never owned a diesel anyting as yet so cant really comment on how they run

Don't do it. I had 2 IS200's before going over to the 2nd Gen IS and bought a 220d SE-L. Loads of toys, very comfortable. Engine and box a nightmare. Agricultural. 6th Gear is useless. Stick it in 6th at any speed, sink your right foot into the carpet and nothing happens. You either spend your time going from 6th back to 5th, back to 6th, or like me, you never ever use 6th. Like you I bought it as I was going to be doing 25k per year. It lasted 5 months before it infuriated me so much, I got rid of it. Big write up about EGR valve carbon build up, which Lexus don't acknowledge or deal with at any service interval. Other very common problem is a loud crack sound from the centre of the dash somewhere. Also, don't believe the fuel figures from Lexus. You really have to drive like miss daisy to get 40mpg. If you need a diesel with decent power, toys and comfort, forget BMW, buy an A6 2.0 TDi 170 LeMans. £90 to fill the tank gets you nearly 700 miles.
