Hi,

After 13 years of owning a near trouble-free LS400 Series 3, I feel that now is the time to change it. I have seen a few problems recently which have all been fixed, but in the last couple of weeks I am just starting to see things that tell me 500 miles a week is a bit much for the old girl now.

I have looked at several posts on here that discuss the merits of the LS430 versus the LS460. I hung on to my LS400 for a long time as I wanted to get the LS430 next, rather than just a Series 4 LS400. Now I find I have held on to the LS400 for so long that I can easily have an LS460 around the £12K to £15K price band. I paid £14 for my LS400 in 2001.

The posts I have read on here do mention some problems with the early LS460's and as such I am a bit nervous of spending that amount of money outside of a Lexus Main Dealer warranty. Some discussions say the 2006 and 2007 models have issues and that 2008 onwards are sorted. Other posts suggest the real improvements are from 2010 onwards.

Some posts suggest that you should count the number of spokes on the alloys and five is good news and anything else isn't !

So, what's the best recommendation? Is there really a big difference between an LS460, LS460SE and LS460SE-L? Some cars advertised as an LS460SE-L are badged as LS460L, some are badged as just being an LS460.

More trivially, is there a cool box in all models? That's something I really would make use of.

Any inputs appreciated as based on how long I've had the LS400, I might be driving this one until 2027! In fact I keep thinking that if I keep the LS400 for another couple of years then I might be able to afford an LS600h.

Thanks,

Martin

Undoubtedly you will be able to afford a Ls600 in a couple of years time ..... and in the meantime you will enjoy another couple of years of just about trouble free, inexpensive, depreciation free luxury motoring !!!

Running costs will double, £500 road tax ,if you get a warranty with it you will be required to get it serviced at a Lexus dealership ,your insurance will increase and you will be petrified of getting it scratched in a car park. These are the cons the pros to be honest are not that much different to driving the mark4. For sure it has a few more gizmos ,but there are a few really good examples of the mark 4 about and for a lot less than 14k.

By the way coolbox plug in to ashtray £40 and you can take it to the picnic were you will celebrate with cordial how much you saved.

My insurance actual went down when I got my LS600hl ... I was £350 fully comp on my LS400 (98) £165 for my GS450h (08) and now LS600 (09) £159 and that s only coz I had to tell them about 3pts I received for speeding in a lorry.... Was £127 prior to points. .. Agree with the parking issue ie getting it scrapped but was like that with LS400 anyway ...... I still have my ls400 and drove it last week and it's like a flintstone car compared to ls600. Lol

really Graham, a flintstone?

Even ride quality and noise?

I still like to see the ls600 in about 16 years and see how they held up ;)
