Lpg = Cylinder Head Problems?

Recommended Posts

Hiya everyone,

Little advice required please.

I have had my LS400 for about 8 years. It has been a fantastic car but I fancy a newer one. I am looking for another LS400 or a LS430.

I was recently speaking to a mate of mine who also has a LS400. He told me that I should be careful about a car fitted with LPG as it can cause damage to the cylinder head due the the heat.

Has anyone had any experience or knowledge of this problem please? Must say I have never heard of it before but would be nice to know.

Thanks in advance. Great forum folks!

That was certainly true in the late '70s/early'80s when my LPG XJ6 suffered from this. That was many years ago and the technology should be much improved by now.

Mate had an lpg Audi a8 which eventually suffered from valve damage, I think due to the dry, non lubricant effect of gas?..he was told one should cycle two tanks lpg to one of petrol to negate this....?....I have no knowledge of lpg, just regurgitating old advice..

There is no need to worry about LPG/cylinder head problems. These engines have hardened valve seats which mean the LPG dosent cause any problem. My present LS400 Mk 4 has been running on it for 6 years no problems. We have run my cars and my wifes cars over 16+ years on various cars and all without the need for Lube kits and not one has given any problem, two of the cars we still know and are still running strongly.
