Hi everyone

My LS has a patched exhaust in the normal place just aft of the cats. Bodging won't do the job much longer, so I was thinking about investing in a fabricated cat back stainless system from the chap in Leeds on eBay who comes highly recommended (I think!).

Thing is, I used to own a TVR Chimera. I love the sound of a throaty V8. I regularly watch the car chases in Bullitt and Mad Max just for the engine noise. Basically, I'm sorely tempted to fit something that will be a bit more noisy.....

Now I know it doesn't fit with the car's raison d'être but I want to know if I can have my cake and eat it - does anyone have a sports exhaust fitted and if so, how does it impinge on the cabin and the cruising refinement?

Cheers

Tom

Hi Tom,

I have a modified exhaust on my LS. It is a full cat-back system with a crossover made of stainless steel of the same bore as the original system.

I only have two small silencers at the rear of the pipes and they are straight through.

The noise in the cabin at 50 MPH is not at all bad but 60 MPH seems to be right on the point where the exhaust note starts to drone a bit. 70 MPH sounds nice again, it just seems to be the 2000 RPM area that is the most intrusive sound.

It feels as though the car is quicker and more responsive, fuel economy improved very slightly and engine braking was reduced considerably (that may be why the fuel economy improved).

I fully appreciate that loud exhausts are not for everyone and that it doesn't really go with the image of the car but it does make me smile when people hear my car , turn round to see what is making the burble and then look confused because all they can see is an LS400 and it couldn't possibly coming from such a classy car.

You can hear my car here

In the video I wasn't accelerating very hard as the engine was stone cold, when it is warmed up the car sounds a little more subdued.

The exhuast was built by LongLife in Peterborough and it cost £650, I can't fault their work. It took almost three days for them to do the job as they had trouble with the manifold studs, I think most of them snapped off.

The two big silencers have been removed as the pipes were still too quiet for me.

I hope this helps you make your decision.

Steve.

Though not my bag - the sound is far more subtle than my MD's DB9 which just sounds plain rude. (or as Jeremy Clark put it - like God Gargling)

I think I will stay with my silenced back end.

On the drone at 60mph, I found my Mk2 had this slight drone at the about 65-68mph, which was a bit intrusive, but the Mk4 has no such problem.

Will do.

This is the modification so far, crusty lower cat flanges cut out,6mm plates fabricated and welded to cat and next pipe.now a face to face fit with just a smear of exhaust sealer,no more chuffing from there now :-) but has accentuated the slight blow from o/s egr pipe which has a slight fracture in it ! that will be the next mission.
