Hi Folks

I love the my Mk 4 but really miss having parking sensors - sticking my head out of the window and playing chicken is an over-rated pastime.

I have a good quality set to fit but wondered has anyone has fitted them previously and have a photo of where to locate them on the bumper. A previous post saw good counsel that the bumper doesn't need to come off for this but has anyone else any tips.

Am very much of the measure twice and cut once mentality.

Otherwise this car remains a real pleasure, having me sell my 3 year old Mercedes E320 as unnecessary and leaving me a pretty good fund for petrol and servicing albeit I miss the park assist.

Thanks

Nick

hi

i have done this twice on my mark 4s

mark up the bumper and drill the holes and feed the wires through - you should be able to do it with a wire and a bit of time

the bumper does no need to come off

remove the driver side light cluster and at the very bottom corner drill a hole in the body to take the wires inside the boot. use a dab of metal sealer if you have it

i normally fix the control box on the right handside - there is plenty of space there - i think there is also use one of the nuts to connect the ground wire here.

the power needs to come from the reverse light - you will need to remover the boot liner which just pops off - remove the plastic from the right hand side boot hinge and feed the wire through there - leave plenty of excess - solder the connection to the reverse bulb wiring

next on the drivers side rear seat push back the seat back and you will see a grey plastic cover - this is for the wire for the speaker/display depending on what you have - drill a hole in this - again a long piece of wire will come handy.

remove both sill plates - they just pop off and feed the wire under the sill plates - i normally place the display on the right handside corner.

thats it really

done twice no problems.

When u get the rear bumper sensors be warned, don't be complacent that they will see all ............ years ago I had an upmarket Merc with those rear sensors, Sadly they don't show the low stubby posts in the ground that whack the bumper coz they fall outside of the sensor beam ................... and you can't see them from your mirrors either.

I paid a specialist £150 to retro-fit parking sensors in my rear bumper on my MK IV LS400 and they worked an absolute treat - well worth the money, convenience and they make the cars more sellable too as owners would now expect these as standard.

I am surprised Lexus didn't make them standard on the LS400s

Great stuff everyone.

Am still reminded when my wife reversed our Honda into a bollard with "I wondered what the beeping was" when asked had the sensors not worked.

Will get on with drilling with only a semblance of fear.

Thanks

  • 2 months later...

I also put a reversing camera in mine, only £29 and a superb image. Tried to do it on the LS430 but I just can't find a way through the back.

The Mk II LS430 has a reversing camera as standard :-)
