New Battery Fitted But...

Recommended Posts

Hi all, some advice please.

Old Battery was on it's way out so bought a new one and fitted it in today.

But now, when I start the car, the dashboard lights don't come on, nor does the clock, radio, the mileage. Only the full beam comes not the half beam or fog lights.

Inside the door sensor comes on and the red door light.

The car won't lock either.

And another strange thing is that the car only revs when the accelerator is pushed right down to the floor. It has a delay.

Could it be the electrics? New fuses needed? Could that affect the acceleration?

Any help much appreciated ta.

Hey Noreen. Couple of things. Make sure the new Battery is of correct spec and not under powered compared to the original. Also check the terminals are securely connected. If both are fine disconnect the Battery, leave for 3in and reconnect. That should reset the ECU and sort the issue. Let me know how you get on.

When removing the old you should've removed the negative terminal first(black) and when connecting he new you should connect the negative last.

Start with the black, end with the black

Whoops, I always do it the other way round!

Okay so I've just disconnected the black for about an hour or so now. May leave it another half hour or so just to be on the safe side before I connect it up again. Different sites were saying to leave it to reset for different times so gone for the maximum just in case!

Thanks for advice guys, much appreciated.

Since we're on the subject of batteries, I know mine is in need of replacement (died a few times last winter, once this summer, and again last night was dead as can be. Charged it up and left it maintaining all day, put it back in and without turning the engine over (just the first click for power) it shows this on the volt gauge;

Can't remember what it should look like on the gauge, mainly cos the Battery as been fubbed for ages now.....

I've never had to wait for anything to reset when changing a Battery. Straight swap over no problems. Car starts and works fine as soon as the new Battery is fitted.

the gauge on mines not to good either, buts thats probably not far off because that will have 12volts in the Battery, just not enough ampage to start it...

Noreen, Did the place that sold you the Battery test it before they handed it over to you? It's not unknown for a brand new Battery to be a dud and it is always a good idea to get them to put the tester on it before you leave the shop. The guys behind the counter are always happy to do this as they know that the Battery is good when it leaves the shop therefore preventing a comeback.
