Help Please - 1St Gear Judder When Hot

Hi all,

I have a 2010 is220d manual, its done 117k which are mostly motorway miles, it's fully serviced (due for a service in about 2k miles) and runs perfectly but I have noticed over the last couple of days since I have been driving a good few hundred miles that when the car has been driven for a while I get a 1st gear judder when moving off.

It's perfectly fine when cold but once I drive for a while I get this judder when in 1st gear whilst lifting the clutch to move off, all other gears are fine, I have noticed that it doesn't judder all the time I would at least 70% of times whilst in traffic.

Any help and ideas are welcomed as to where I need to start looking my gut tells me the clutch needs replacing?

U can get from eBay around 700-800 for clutch @ flywheel search some co r cheaper its a luk kit which is pretty good dmf is worn but clutch might b ok but since u got gearbox off get done together. It's a common fault on is220d manual box that's y Lexus stop doing manual,I get that on mine which is 2006 but now I'm used to it when dmf gets warm thats when it plates up,when I got my car last yr 2nd gear used to pop out got complete box replaced under warranty did ask about clutch/dmf said it ok mines done 85k had box at 76k hope this helps @ good luck

Hi, did you ever get the problem resolved?

I seem to have the exact same issue and my car has similar mileage.

How much did it cost you in the end?

Hi Haydor89,

I did get a clutch specialist to drive my car before to see if it's really worth getting the clutch/DMF replaced, the chap drove my car and said it's not worth replacing yet as the problem was very slight and did not happen often enough to warrant spending the money.

Since my post I have learnt to drive the car without getting the judder 98% of the time, I have learnt you just can't take off very quickly off 1st gear.

I believe it's somewhat also the characteristics of this particular car from what I have read from other peoples posts previously.

I would get a clutch specialist to test drive it and get their opinion, also I'm sure other more knowledgeable members will have some input on here perhaps.

Let us know how you get on with your problem as it would be good to know the outcome, just a heads up that the cost of clutch and DMF alone are in the region of £800+ depending on where you get parts from and then labour.

Thanks for the quick reply.

It doesn't happen early morning, however, after driving around a bit and getting stuck in traffic, the judder gets really annoying!

Going to get it checked out tomorrow afternoon. Checking the service history, everything has been changed but the clutch, so it is due a change.

Reading about the forums, average flywheel lifespan is about 100,000 miles.

I was kind of hoping you would say that you just changed the clutch, and the dmf is fine, as with my previous car, 3 Series E90, when the clutch was going you could tell immediately.

Got my local mechanic to drive it around for a bit.

Initially he thought it WAS the clutch, but after thoroughly testing it he concluded it was something else.

He said my clutch and dmf is fine, otherwise it would stall or be more violent.

Stuck it on the diagnostic machine. The results are below.

My air flow sensor was faulty and reading at -39 degrees centigrade, hence the issue only happening after it warms up.

So now looking to replace the air flow sensor, it's an easy job and I can do it myself.

Will keep you posted.

Have you tried cleaning with electronic contact cleaner, will cost you about £5, just spray the delicate sensor and leave to air dry before fitting back.

It just might be very dirty if it's never been cleaned before.

Been told it has never been replaced and they have an average life of 50k - 100k miles. Just ordered a new one for £80 off eBay, genuine OE part.
