I am well down the road of buying an LS430 in the Republic of Ireland. But i found a complication this morning in that Admiral are not able to add the car to my multi-car policy without a UK reg. So for the period of driving it to an MOT station, then home, while I wait for the DVLA to give me a registration, I need some insurance.

has anyone done this and have a recommendation or good idea?

Thanks in advance

Jon

Insurance companies should be able to insure a car on the VIN but if Admiral won't you may have to contact a few specialist insurer's.

I have in the past taken out a days cover to move a car, not cheap at around £30.00 a day but cheaper than a transporter which is the other option.

Apparently Adrian Flux will insure on the VIN.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. The thought occurs - it was originally UK and the DVLA told me there is every chance that they will restore the original number plate. So what if I tried insuring it on that reg? I suppose I will have to ask the ins co.

I was hoping someone here had done this and could talk me through it, so happy to write it up in case anyone else follows my footsteps. The tax in ireland will certainly continue to exert a downward pressure on prices of big cars for the foreseeable future.

Thanks again

Jon

I've just looked at the prices for the irish road tax and it's astronomic. I entered the engine size as 4.3 litre and got this.....

Road Tax

Currently in Ireland there are 2 systems under which road tax is calculated for passenger cars and this is always a source of confusion, hopefully the following with explain the system to you.

All cars older than 2008 have their road tax calculated based on the cars engine cc's. All cars that are 2008 or newer have their road tax calculated based on the cars CO2 emissions. The above is true in 99% of cases.

The CO2 based system came into force in July 2008 meaning new cars registered between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008 initially had their motor tax charged on the basis of the existing engine size (c.c.) system. However, a low CO2 emitting new car registered between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008 had its motor tax switched to the lower CO2 based motor tax rate on first renewal of motor tax post 1 July 2008, when the new CO2 based system commenced. New cars which were registered in the first 6 months of 2008 whose tax would be more under the new CO2 based system continue to pay motortax on the basis of engine size. "

And this is why there is bargains in Ireland! plus the euro is just worth 74p at the moment so good exchange rates.just £55 reg fee to bring it in but there is a load of forms to fill, and you have to contact HMRC first to fill in a NOVA.I had trouble getting insurance too on the VIN number but if you contact the Beareau of insurers they will give you contact details of who will.

Hi,

If you need any help with insurance for a vehicle on a chassis number then please feel free to drop me a line.

Regards,

Dan.

Hi Dan

Thank you for your interest. I called your office this morning and spoke to your colleague, also named Dan, who went though the quotation process with me. He came up with a price that I was not expecting :(

I have just done a price comparison web site and the best quotes are all around 40% of Dan's number, so I guess I will have to check with them whether they are happy to insure on the Vin for the first fortnight.

Thanks again

Sorry if I am deviating from the topic but what do you have to do for the road tax if you want to buy a car in Ireland and drive it back?

According to the .gov website road tax is only payable once the DVLA have issued UK plates but you still need insurance.

I will do a full write-up once I have completed my import (don't want to jinx it, after too many twists and turns already) but basically you get insurance on the VIN, drive to a pre-booked MOT then home, then park the vehicle while you wait for the DVLA to convert the foreign reg, MOT, V55 form and a cheque into a new UK reg.

Thanks Jon, all the best, hope everything works out fine and I shall soon follow your footsteps

A quick update as the boat pulls in to Holyhead harbour. Came over this afternoon to be meet at the airport by my vendor. The car was as described and pictured so I handed over the cash and have started heading for home. Tomorrow it goes in for mot and a quick inspection so I will know more.

Home now. Lovely drive. Only problem was the tyre pressure warning light, which he had warned me was likely to come on. The sound system did a great job of keeping me awake!

Paperwork is all to be done, so full report will follow.
