Hi guys been looking at an is200 as a family car for the missus. I have had a good look through the buyers guide for common faults but one thing I haven't seen a lot of info on is the quality of the rust protection. I have viewed a couple with spots of rust on the sills towards the rear. After googling it, it seems to be a more common problem?

A friend has an MR2. I know they are notorious for sills rusting inside out due to some sort of foam that toyota placed in the sills that retain moisture. Do the is200s suffer from the same and is any other part of the chassis prone to rust?

Any car will eventually develop rust(except fibreglass),how old are the ones you have looked at?how well have they been looked after?got none on mine but then look after it pretty well, and it's nearly 12 years old lol.

Thanks for reply. Age ranges from a 99 to 02. Rest of the body seemed good and no signs of crash or abuse. There is an interesting video on YouTube where a guy shows inside of the sills on his own. You can clearly see the rust forming in the box section.

Well to be honest with you,you are bound to expect some rust on cars that age,you are looking at cars that are 13 to 15 years old(have seen Mercs,Bmw's Audi and other makes)less than 10 years old with rust.Personally I think they are pretty well protected and it is not a common problem.Having said that what are your expectations?

Rust on the sills just below and in front the rear doors is very common.

A lot started rusting there early in their life, a lot were covered by the 12 year anti corrosion warranty, my old 200 had work on the sills under this warranty.

Most IS's are over 12 years old now tho

Oh well lucky me lol have had two IS's,have had none on either, admittedly gets cleaned(even behind the wheel arches and below the sills)waxed, polished regularly, the main chassis too seems well protected.Hopefully you will eventually find one that ticks all the right boxes for you, happy hunting :-)
