Hey all,

My new car is a low miles 2006 IS220D with FSH. It occasionally puffs out some white smoke (not rev dependant) - DPF has been checked and is ok, no faults recorded and its not using an oil or water or losing power / using loads of fuel.

Could anyone give me a steer as to what I should look at next? Testing injectors? Cylinder head? Any ideas for a good place to check it over in the Manchester area would also be great,

Thanks and i'll keep my fingers crossed that somebody may be able to help,

o :)

I'm having the same issue. First I was told is dpf, went to dpf specialist ,tested all great. Then I was directed to change turbo, done it, still not resolved. Then injectors, they been striped and tested, all good. I think my last chance is cleaning Egr valve. Been at Lexus reading and because smoke is only occasional, they couldn't reproduce it. My car smokes occasionally, but I also have poor fuel economy and lag on acceleration below 2000rpm. I hope it's Egr blocked, will get it cleaned this week.

What was the outcome on this one?

I have exactly the same problem, dpf is fine, egr has been replaced, its had a new turbo.

Im thinking its the 5th injector, was your 5th injector replaced?

Hy, I have exactly the same problem with white smoke. I was to the dealer Lexus and they suggested me to change the 5th injector. A friend suggested me to clean injector with ultasounds, But he doesn t clean this type of injector . Anyone know which is the working principle of 5th injector (if it works on 12v or 7v?, etc )

I was told by guy who done testing of my injectors that they came back OK, he changed injector seats, but I kind of don't believe to be honest. Symptoms are saying that is injector passing too much fuel. Especially adding to it that from time to time my car fails to start

Well, the only thing I can think of is that one of the items that tested as ok is in fact faulty. Not really helpful I know, but I am running out of ideas.

When the white smoke comes out, does it idle ok? Also, you say the car is slow to respond, but once the turbo boosts, does it go like it should? Lastly, what fuel consumption figures are you getting?

Haven't really done anything :)

Your fuel consumption seems a little high. I get around 28-30mpg around town and 40-45 on the motorway.

Perhaps you should try an ODB2 reader?

In the thread here:

Post 14 is where Paul recommends what I picked up. The good thing about it is that your phone logs the journey, so you can have a look back at the figures later. That way, if the smoke does occur, make a note of when it happens and have a look at the logs after to see if anything is up.

Other than that, you could test the sensors again with a multimeter to see the resistance. White smoke suggests water being burnt, so perhaps check the water connectors going to the turbo again?

What's strange is that white smoke indicates burning water, which shouldn't effect performance, but a dodgy sensor wouldn't cause white smoke to come out.

Perhaps someone with a better understanding can shed some light on this?

Either way, I would love to know what is going on.

You check the 5th injector ? White smoke means regeneration PDF. If the first or second sensor not touch 600grC, the regeneration process is incomplete and this leads to more white smoke. This problem is caused by the 5th injector. I have the same problem and next week I have an appointment on service to cleaning 5th injector with ultrasounds.

I will ring Lexus Reading tomorrow as last time they done checks , they said they can't reproduce any faults. I want to ask them about ECU version, I have got gut feeling that mine is out of date and that might be the issue. Injectors were tested again today and came back spot on.

Let us know how you getting on with your 5th injector.

No I didn't yet test 5th injector.

By out of date I mean that apparently there was a firmware update to ECU to version 500, I don't have any sticker on my engine cover so I am assuming mine is still with previous version.

Thats what I found in different threat:

"Hi thought i would offer some feed back here for you,i used to work for lexus/toyota up to 6 weeks ago. There are some issues with the 5th injector and all injectors for that matter with the 220d.the engine is from the avensis T180 to start with, where it had small problems with the e.g.r system and water consumption.when they fitted it to the is220 they made it rear wheel drive and re-maped the e.c.u to allow for better driving.this caused the car to over fuel on short runs cloging up the e.g.r even faster and causing ruff idle and poor m.p.g(the car was never great on m.p.g before).the 5th injector is for cold start and extra fuel for high throttle response(very basic discription here)the problem was it was staying in to long and over fueling(this is the e.c.u re-flash you are talking about to aid the problem).the over fuelng was cloging up the injectors making the whole problem worse.Lexus have made new injectors now with a differnt spray nossile and coating to ease the issue.there have been a few cars that have blown head gaskets due to these problems.

I hope that shines a bit of light on the subject for you all? "

Hi,

I am getting the same white smoke symptoms, looks like i have done similar things to you, I have recently also had a new 5th injector fitted and the ECU software updated by lexus - the white smoke isnt as bad as the car warmed up now but the problem is still there. The DPF was replaced about 10000 miles ago so im not sure if it could be this.

Did you get any further on this? I would be interested to know,

Thanks,

J
