Hello, have had only cold air blowing through vents for few weeks, last week checked coolant levels and found greyinsh gulk in resevoir. Told by a friend that greyish gunk isnt abnormal in this weather using car for fequent short journeys. Tonight car began to overheat on motorway, lifted bonnet later on to find coolant/oily gunk splattered all over underneath coolant resevoir and coolant low. Checked under oil cap and no gunk at all. Is this a Head gasket failure or could it be something else? Any advice greatly appreciated as I'm  going to local garage in morning 👍

It does unfortunately sound like head gasket failure.

Sometimes a white residue can form under the oil cap when the car is run for short journeys in cold weather, but that doesn't sound like that has happened in this case.

The coolant splattered around seems to suggest a pressurized system caused by broken coolant channel in the head gasket.

Having only cold air for a few weeks is strange though.  Normally it would indicate low coolant, so have you been topping it up?

Any white smoke coming out of the back?

Usually, a sniff and/or a compression test should give you a definitive answer.
