IS-F gearbox problem

Recommended Posts

I found this but it only relates to leaking oil after changing fluid.

Seems that refilling the gearbox oil is a mega task in its own right.

Seen a few posts about rusty cooler pipes on other lexus models.

Found a pic as well

thanks for all your support guys, much appreciated. At least I know other people also agree with me that Lexus are being extremely harsh with the way they are treating me.

I have been on Twitter to vent my anger and Lexus have contacted me straight away and asked for my registration and claim number and stated they will get someone from customer relations to contact me.

I have also emailed Paul Van Der Burgh and Richard Balshaw raising my concerns.

I had a issue with my GS bumper after a small scuff against a kerb cracked the bumper from a area which they told me had "a scratch" and needed painting, which i took Sheffield Lexus word. I was shocked to have seen a massive chunk of plastic missing and fillered like no tomorrow.

They didnt get back to my messages at all which lead me to complain to head quarter's. I managed to get bumper of them in the end.

Its defo worth a shot.

UPDATE:

Right guys, major update due. So Lexus did eventually agree to repair the oil cooler and pipes etc. However since the repair the gearbox has not been functioning correctly. It would not go into gears easily. It would labour when shifting up and you had to press down on the accelerator for it to pop into gear. I have been driving it in manual mode for the last 12 months!!

The car has been taken into Lexus Leeds on a number of occasions to try and solve the issue. However the problem persisted and Lexus UK have agreed to replace the gearbox! Great news! I pick the car up on Monday. They have also replaced the manifold. The bill in total is over £15k I believe. Glad I had warranty. Its not been an easy process but we have got there in the end!

£18k!? For a gearbox change? It would be good to know the breakdown of the bill...

That's the total bill which includes new gearbox, new torque converter, new exhaust piece that has the lambda sensor, new lambda sensor and all the labour charge. Next time I am there I will see if I can get the full breakdown of each part but I think the gearbox on it's own is around £8500.

Thanks, it would be interesting to know the labour time to change the gearbox. For 08 owners its crazy to think a gearbox failure can practically write-off the car. I guess if you are out of warranty you could go for a salvaged/reconditioned gearbox as a last resort.

Glad you got it all done under warranty!

Nice one, Bet you have been pounding the roads of Yorkshire since then with a broader grin than usual.

As for a second hand gearbox? I think the one from the ISF written off a couple months ago was being offered for £3K. but go find another second hand one somewhere if you needed one.

Hi all,

I have this exact issue with my ISF(2009), luckily I took the warranty out on it when I bought the car. It's been with the garage since the beginning of June and with the Covid issues it has taken a long time for the warranty company to come out and inspect the car. The work has finally been authorised (circa £18k) but have been told that there a no gearboxes available and that my gearbox is being sent off to be overhauled. Does this sound reasonable? I find it hard to believe that the part is unavailable. Apparently the dealer has checked the system and there are none available in Europe or Japan as they no longer make this part.

I remember this occurring to another member who I think was out of warranty and they found a gearbox specialist who managed to refurb the unit. I seem remember they did a good job and it was good as new once returned. Might be worth digging that out and advising the deal to send it to them? I'd be happier sending it to a company that had seen one before personally.

Was it the radiator that corroded internally and caused the issue?

Thanks, I did do a search on here earlier and couldn't find anything on a refurbed box. I'll take another look to see if I can find the post.

I haven't been told exactly what caused the issue.

Thank you, much appreciated. I will give the dealer a call and suggest Mackies to him.

Also, they have confirmed as stated earlier it was the radiator that corroded that caused the issue.

Worth all ISF owners replacing their radiator, which means you are then good for another 8 years +.

Transmission cooler within the radiator failure, allowing coolant into the transmission, is a problem that affects the LS430 too - several transmission failures because of this.
