HOW MUCH????????

I took my Sport in to the dealer yesterday because the brake system warning light came on. they have told me that all the discs need replacing along with the pads. and the near side caliper has seized. :flaming::flaming: They have told me that the caliper is covered by the warrentee, but the discs and pads I will have to pay for. With labour this comes to just under £700 :flaming::flaming: My point is the car was checked by the RAC in December. I have done approx 7000 miles since then. surely they would have picked up that the discs were at their limits. I mean all the discs are shot??????? :o:o there is nothing on the RAC report about the discs being worn so much that they may need replacing within 10,000 miles. what should I do? In fairness the service dept at Guilford are looking at the situation, but I may still have a bill for nearly £700 :flaming::flaming::flaming:

You might wanna have a look at aftermarket brakes Les. I just put on a set of EBC Greenstuff pads (front and rear) plus a pair of EBC grooved front discs. Total bill was about 330quids. If you add on say 75 for a pair of rear discs - you're talking 400 pounds all done and much better brakes!!

The other thing I'd TOTALLY recommend, is take your car for a second opinion - to a decent NON-Lexus dealer - act dumb and see what they say.

I had the same situation. Bought my car in December from Lexus Cardiff, got the RAC check, then next service cost just under £1100. (see thread titled 40k service, ouch).

A bit of warning would have been nice.

Thing is, when I had the car delivered, the passenger door hinge needed tightening up and the cd player was broken. Surely the door should have been noticed?

I don't understand

I already posted about this subject

1 disc costs aprox 53 UK £, this is at a official lexus dealer in Belgium.....!!!!!!!!!

why does UK dealers are asking a multiple of that figure??

Les,

If the disks etc have gone due to the caliper being seized - should they not also replace these FOC???

If they stick to their 'consumables' line, get them done elsewhere. I have more knowledge with regards to Honda, EBC greenstuff are not better than the stock Honda pads on sporty models, but are almost half the price!!! Mintex are very good. Depends how hard you drive as to which I'd recommend.

If you do go for EBC - get their disks as well as pads, EBC pads and 'other' disks don't usually go together well.

I would also go for spotted NOT drilled - drilled weakens them and they can crack. If you have big enough brakes and don't suffer from fade, no need to even have the spotted, a few grooves will be enough. Do note - if you don't have grooved already - these can sometimes be noisy ... esp. in reverse!

You certainly got that right UV - when I first got mine fitted I nearly jumped outta my skin when I braked!!

My main reason for buting the Greenstuff pads was that they don't shed loads of brake dust over my luvvly alloys - definite improvement!

LOL - you're prolly right, although they're shedloads better than the Toyota ones that were on there. With 2 tonnes fo auto, you don't need to use them hard to make dust!!

UV - I meant to ask you - I get some noise off my new slotted/spotted discs even when I'm not braking - it's very faint and I can only hear it reflected from parked cars and wooden fences with the windows open - like a sorta ticking - I'm guessing it's the grooves passing under the pads - does that sound normal to you?

Hey Guys and Gals sorry I did not get back to you all. Thank you for your interest and comments. the situation so far is that the car was in the Guilford Lexus work shop all stripped down they had me over a barral. I needed my car back on the road, so reluctantly I let them go ahead with the work. and payed through the nose for it. A very big lesson learned the hard way. However I will be Watching to see how these brakes last I have a note of the mileage. thanks again guys. :):):)

Forgive the stupid question, but why were the disks shot? Surely that's not normal. I thought there was an audible warning when the pads reach the end of their service life. If you have the pads changed in good time why should the disks need changing?
