Cracked Manifold

I have to say that I haven't noticed any thing significant noise wise on startup. other than the exhaust of course which always makes me smile... (and the mechanics who were around when I took the car in for some new tyres recently)..

@Jgtcracer Well that's a relief due consideration is given. :sweatdrop:  My biggest concern at work today is should I use a bar chart or a pie diagram in a presentation. Slightly less risk if I get it wrong:thumbup:

Sit rep with 98,000 on my ISF the manifold is in rude health and long may that continue.

Slightly tenuous although temperature related it did surprise me to see a number of cars at LeMans suffer from failures due to high engine bay temperatures cooking starter motors for instance. I would think they would have that covered, so to speak.

Unfortunately I asked that dreaded question when mine was in for a service Tuesday, I’ve been told yes there is a slight crack and the noise goes after initial start up due to the manifold expanding and closing. Mine has been like this from purchase (over 4 years) and I was told by Lexus Coventry that they are all like that on start up!

actually they’re not, next predicament is Lexus Woodford have quoted £1600 for both parts and labour is 7-8 hours at £140+ an hour, will discount the manifolds to £1320-15% off, I’ve got a set of GSF manifolds that bolt on directly with improved materials and better exhaust gas flow.......BUT unable to confirm flange joint at base level ie......bore size differences (if any)......been quoted £800ish to fit the GSF ones and possibly cheaper if base connection is straight forward, head line up is identical so no issues there only potential issue is underside connection to the exhaust, there is no link pipe either just manifold to exhaust 🙄

Thanks for your info, do you know how they diagnosed it, did they just know by hearing it or did they actually inspect visually.

Diagnosis was by ear, the manifolds are low down and all work is carried out from the underside, I’m LED to believe the gearbox or housing and associated parts need to be removed to gain access, labour time is a published 7-8 hours to complete, best way for us (novices) is to allow the tick to stop then lightly rev it once off choke, if it’s cracked you will hear the ticking at a lower level.

Got ya, thanks. I believe this is exactly what mine does.

 

Cold start it ticks badly, then as the ticking stops, fast idle (choke) stops at the same time, and if I rev it/blip it I’ll still hear a tick.

After a while no obvious tick when I rev it (prob expanded enough to close gap) but under load driving I hear a tick tick tick with engine speed / load as the gap will still be there and have much more exhaust exiting thus I hear it through the baulkhead.

That’s not a “like” in a pleased way, but sounds like yours are too, when up to temperature its not noticeable every time, but sometimes it’s sounds very faint, tbh I think I’d be looking at aftermarket manifolds rather than ISF ones, will be having the GSF ones fitted as I got them off a friend for free and it’s £1320 I don’t have to try and find (bloody kids n uni costs).......not sure what the GSF ones cost but I’m LED to believe they rectified the issues with these.

Yours might sound worse than mine, if you’ve heard it for 4 years. Mines just started so I’ll see if it starts to get worse.

No, no video, can video later when home from work, inside car or under bonnet? Never recorded it from under bonnet side, imagine it sounds loud mine also has a S/S cat back system so it’ll sound louder anyway. May have one from rear of car after exhaust was fitted, I’ll see if i can find it

Mines on the drivers side which apparently is the hardest side to get to, may as well do both as the labour aspect is massive, sorry to be the barer of bad news

Well Wednesday is manifolds day 😬......car being dropped off tomorrow and GSF manifolds going on, looking forward to hearing the difference with a kinda open mind.......not looking forward to the bill (ball park £900) as never been done before.

Keep us posted, what dealership? Any chance you could get the dealer to detail how they diagnose such an issue! Might help me out 👍🏻

Not main dealers, “Westfield Motors” near me (rawreth) they are Lexus n Toyota specialists, Lexus wouldn’t entertain fitting GSF manifolds to an ISF 🙄. Will keep you posted on what they say, fitment and any other information 👍🏻

EARLY update, just spoken to Westfield motors (Ian) GSF manifolds are on, straight forward swap despite formation difference, everything lines up, my manifold was cracked around and only held in position by the three that weren’t!....only alteration is the oil dip stick tube fails the manifold and is at present removed and being reshaped to clear the manifold, the heat shields are totally different as so if anyone was to proceed down the GSF manifold route you would need a set of these, thankfully mine came with them......car should be up and running today with a geometry test required as the sub frame had to be removed for access, biggest concern was the steering rack BUT they have cleared the rack as formation is identical once the branches join pipe to exhaust, just a new O2 sensor (jammed in) and a couple of gaskets and it’s a goer 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Update @ 17:55, just had a call from Westfield motors, car is done, final bill is £1179:55, bill includes all parts, fabrication required at exhaust connector, dip stick removal, fabrication and relocation, new O2 sensor and gasket set, geometry testing of car.......damn that VAT 😂......always manages to ruin a decent figure 🙄

Hi Paul, I think that’s pretty reasonable considering what’s been done & glad it’s sorted. 

I would be interested to hear if you think there is any difference in how it drives now?

Hi David,

thanks, I’m looking forward to collecting tomorrow morning, I’m looking forward to the cold start up and no ticking 🤞🏻😂......power “should” feel better as I’m LED to believe the manifold was well n truly knackered 🙄.......the GSFs are an improved manifold in design and materials used, obviously the same manifold that’s on the RCF, the bore size is larger so better exhaust flow should see an improvement, Ryo reckons possibly 440-450 as the GSF are 470, I also had a cat back exhaust made with resonator removal so that to should see a small improvement too, tbh I’d be happy with a cold start up and no ticking 🤞🏻😂😂

The car is back, feels livelier, quieter in cabin, no ticking on cold start up, no ticking while driving from cold (could hear ticking in normal driving when cold 2-2500rpm) inside cabin, Bill is attached along with parts required and a couple of photos of the old units, they reckon the formation should of been....weld, flange, weld, flange......as weld, flange, flange, weld has put excessive stress on last branch, would be interesting to know if Lexus altered the weld, flange set up on the latter cars as the issue seems to mainly affect early ones, 

£1200 poorer but a happier poorer now its purring

you can add my car to this list too. 26K on a 2009 and its started to tick on cold start. Lexus have confirmed its there but need to investigate. So as its under warranty i may have to pay for the dia charge at 7.5hrs labour as they think the engine needs to drop. Well from this thread we know it doesnt. If there is a crack, it will be raised as a warranty claim and then see what happens. Dealer thinks as its part of the exhaust system it may not be covered...... Watch this space!

Fingers crossed mate.......think the whole warranty “you pay first” is all wrong 😡
