Hi,

I've had my IS300h f-sport for around 6 months and the Active Sound Control has started to make a horrible noise. It sounds like the speaker in the centre of the dash is blown so I just get a hideous crackling noise from it but when I'm playing music the speaker sounds great... So I was wondering has anyone experienced this? Is the ASC played through a different speaker? And does anyone know how to get to the speaker?

Thanks

It may be the volume control knob for the ASC is dirty and causing poor contact. It's on the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel.

Not experienced this myself as I have asc switched off. Bit of a gimmick really. If you want simulated engine noise they should make it a V10 from the LFA.

Can’t answer that one haha. I know I’m just a stickler for things working as they should. Had another look at it yesterday and it turns out that central speaker isn’t actually playing music at all so was wondering if it should or if it’s just for the ASC system, might be a dead speaker...

I'm getting the same audio crackle when the ASC is switched on in my IS. It doesn't bother me too much as I don't care at all for fake engine noise and keep it switched off. But I am intrigued about whether the central speaker on the dash is solely dedicated to this feature...

Hi,

I ended up getting Lexus Bolton to quote a repair for me while my car was in for a service, which from memory I believe was £270, apparently they see this same problem quite a lot. I since contacted Lexus Parts Direct and eventually managed to figure out what speaker is causing the problem (as even a Lexus parts specialist didn’t know that this speaker existed!). As it turns out, it’s not the central speaker in the dash, that speaker is just used for the audio system, there is an additional ASC dedicated speaker within a speaker-box which is located behind the radio within the dash. Ive added the link down below to the part but even the speaker and housing alone is £158.98 so I haven’t really been able to justify the cost to myself for a fake engine noise....

Hope this helps!

Ahhh okay, that clears things up regarding the speaker on the dash.

£160 odd just for the ASC speaker and housing?! Yeah I think I'm with you on that - not worth the time nor money. I'm guessing the repair would involve taking the dash apart which can bring it's own set of problems too. Fake engine noise isn't really my thing - glad they give the option to turn it off.

Thanks for the effort man!

You really need to open the box and see what's inside.

As far as I can see the connector only has two pins, so is that just a 12V supply to some electronics in the box that generates the fake engine noise and feeds it to the speaker, or is the noise generated elsewhere and the connector is just the feed to the speaker?

What I'm getting at is that it's a two-stage thing. Something generates the noise and the speaker lets us hear it, so is it the speaker or the electronics that's faulty?

According to the label that box contains a speaker rated at 4Ω 5W, so any speaker small enough to fit in there and rated at 4Ω 5W should do as a replacement to see if it works.

Here's one at Farnell for £4.88

That sounds like a very good suggestion! I have half a mind to start ripping my interior to pieces now but I know the entire centre console has to be lifted off and the radio removed so might be quite a time consuming job...

I'm thinking the housing will be there purely to act as some kind of resonator just to affect the sound, I can’t see it being anything more complicated than a simple speaker inside but I have been wrong before....
