Extended warranty for IS300H

Recommended Posts

My cars 3 year warranty is coming up to the end of it's 3rd year.

For those who have an older ( more than 3 years) IS300H, can i ask if its worth getting an extended warranty for say 2 years ?

Not worth it IMO.

Ours is 5 years old in 3 months and no issues at all

Depends on your feelings about risk. I'm quite averse to it so have extended warranty on my GS for peace of mind. The chance of something going wrong are slim but if they do the cost is probably going to be expensive. The Lexus roadside assistance that comes with it is very comprehensive and worth having as it covers another driver in the same household and in any car.

The risk of anything going wrong with a Lexus is very slim, especially in a car so new. Being that Lexus has a great track record of reliability, it seems somewhat odd to get an extended warranty on these. Fair enough on something German but in my experience, and especially with the Lexus vehicles I have had over the years, I dont think its worth it as you would A) break even or B) spend more money than you need to.

Over 5 years, I would probably consider a warranty, but certainly not after 3.

As Alan said, depends on your appetite for risk, or more specifically what you have in the bank and what you are prepared to spend. A three year old Lexus is highly unlikely to go wrong, but if you suddenly faced with say a £2000 bill for a new infotainment screen, have you got that sitting in an account? If you've bought a car with every last penny you could scrape together, something like that could be disastrous. If you've bought comfortably within your means, than probably not; it'd be annoying, but doable. Things do go wrong on cars, it's sadly unavoidable, but with Lexus you are at least minimising the risk. You read some dreadful stories on Honest John of people who have stretched themselves to get a used car they crave then have a unexpected big bill, or have bought something major ticket (mostly Land Rover products it seems) and have no choice really but to stump up out of warranty.

If it's any comfort, my IS was seventeen when I sold it, so had no possibility of a warranty, not even after market - and I never had any doubts about that. ☺️

Save your money, there probably more chance of having an accident than the IS300H developing any issues.

I went for the extended warranty for an additional two years - peace of mind really. Appreciate that the cars are very reliable and one of the reasons I bought one, but the laws of probability is that the one in a zillion chance of something going wrong could be me - and Lexus are certainly not cheap to put right if they do - I have first hand experience of the cost of repairs after what I thought was a small accident (not my fault) that nearly wrote my IS 300h off due to the cost of the parts that were needed! Also factoring in the full breakdown service that is also included and the ability to pay for it monthly it ticked the boxes for me, but very much a personal choice and I have run other cars without extended warranties too so can appreciate both sides of the argument.

At the end of the day, you need to do what feels best for you. If a warranty gives you peace of mind, then it's worth every single penny. Now, just sit back and continue to enjoy the IS300h!

This is a decision that I will have to make in a years time, but will almost certainly extend the warranty. Peace of mind, breakdown cover for two vehicles and monthly payments make this attractive to me.
