how would or what's the best way to you find out if at set of illuminated scuff plates work before actually fitting them

Does your car have memory seats, or is it a MY2011 face-lift model, like mine?

On a 2010 F-Sport, they're plug and play, so you can just test fit them. The wiring/connector for them is already in place so it's literally a 5min job to pull off the OEM plates and connect up an illuminated one to check if it works or not.

If you have a later car, a small and simple mod is needed to make them light up  This guide shows you what needs to be done - Illuminated Sill Retrofit

No. They're not plug and play on a faceflift. You'll have to fit an additional wire as outlined in the guide I posted earlier.

thanks it's just that I took the scuff plates down my local garage and asked them to sort of test them before I proceed to try and fit them and they wouldn't light up

If they contain LED's that provide the light source then they will be polarity dependant. Ie if the mechanic provided 12v across the input wires then there is a 50/50 chance of it working!
