There goes the exhaust!

Recommended Posts

After some exhaust advise.  Was heading out this morning and noticed the car sounded different, it was using more revs than normal although I thought it could just be cold.  Travelled 300 meters and stopped at the lights when the car felt really rough followed by a clang.  Got out to inspect and found this in the road behind the car

Managed to drive the car home without any issues although already wondering how much this is going to cost.  I'm guessing this isn't repairable, am I going to need to replace the entire back box section?  I've found this online which seems reasonable:-

If anyone has been in this position who could give me an idea of likely costs, I'd really appreciate it

Thanks

That's an average price as there are a few around these days - you can also look on eBay and find them there.

One thing you don't want is a part that requires any alterations to the flange where it connects to the centre piece of the exhaust as it is more than likely that the centre section will go next - look (if you can) around the centre resonator for rust around the pipes into and out of the box as they will generally go there due to a lack of a good support in that area.

You wont get an exact replacement for your Lex, quality wise, as the exhaust systems installed on them are a higher grade of mild steel, the ones you will see being sold are of a lesser grade but serviceable none the less. Noise wise, ask the seller or manufacturer of it but generally a mild steel one will absorb the noise.

Your other option would be a SS one which is dearer but would last the life of the car usually but be noisier than the stock one...

One of the silencers have broken off my car like 3 years ago, I have looked the to places where it was broken and it wasn't rusted, just shiny metal with one or 2 spots of rust. My point - it has broken on the weld, not due to the rust. As such I just local garage to weld it back on and 3 years later it is still in place - £60.

I am toying with idea of getting whole custom system with valves etc. but frankly car is not worth it and it woudl add no power etc. so I will probably not going to go that way.

Last thing - back box whenever it is there or not should not affect your revs and should not make car to stutter. If anything care could not care less if back box is on or not, better if not. That is not like catalyst converters with o2 sensors which would matter. In short I am quite surprised with your symptoms and wonder if they are telling something else.

Same thing happened to my is220d. Driving along then heard scraping before could stop heard bang. Stopped found back box missing and bumper hanging off a bit. After stopping at usual high street shops. Sorry guv dealer only part.

bummer, got a replacement back box from a specialist, took a day but got sorted for £220. God knows what Lexus would charge. Is a stainless steel one with lifetime guarantee too.

Firm I used was Powerflow. There is a branch in sittingbourne if any use to you. Just google Powerflow sittingbourne.

Exactly what happened to me, even the bumper hanging off a bit.  Were powerflow happy to fit the part you supplied?  £220 is an excellent price, did that include fitting??

** Edit **. Ah, I see they custom make the section.  I'll contact them tomorrow for a quote, only a few minutes down the motorway from me, thanks for the info.

£220 was the full price I paid, they make and fit the parts. You ring first for quote, then they book you in and work takes few hours.

Mine done at the Wirral centre, had no problems with mine. Hope you get sorted, it seems a few of us on here had this happen my is220d, your is250, remember member on gs board had it happen.

Don't forget IS220d only have 1 silencer, on IS250 it is dual set-up so the price you getting quoted will always be for whole back section (Y + 2 silencers), which is what you should get anyway if you going replacement route.

I got a complete catback done by powerflow for £700.  You may want to get the guys to check the middle section whilst they are looking at the rear.  It has a weak spot at the y section that usually goes at some stage.

All fixed, a friend of a friend owns a workshop in the local town, had a look and said it was a simple weld job, sleeved and reinforced, also checked the other silencer and the centre section which was fine.  £30!!  Pretty happy with that outcome.

Meanwhile Powerflow got back to me and said "

Good morning

A complete back box system (2 silencer) for the Lexus IS250 will be from £249 including VAT and fitting, will be fabricated in 304 Stainless Steel which will come with a lifetime warranty and will include your choice of tailpipe.

Pretty decent price that, I expected more.

To Baviaannl, glad you got sorted, any luck fixing your bumper back in place?

I just gorilla taped mine back in place, just want rid of this is220d now. Fed up with it lol. Want a takumi Es when launched but will probably end up with an old is250 when I stop dreaming.

Deffo another Lexus for me, glad to see back of diesel when time comes, hopefully sooner rather than later. Hope exhaust stays on this time I get another.

I'm looking at the bumper today, still not 100% sure what needs to be replaced.  Seems to be a single clip on the furthest side which isn't holding.  I really like the car so want it perfect, little issues like that really bother me.

I did get the exhaust inspected yesterday when it was in for it's service.  I was told there is nothing to worry about, the weld is strong and there are no weaknesses to any other section.

Hi baviaannl, looks like you got sorted there. Like yourself hate the little things that spoil a car. My bumper taped down but hate the look lol. Mine looks like the end clip broken too, it did come off in my hand. How did you get yours fixed? Cost wise?
