Engine oil type - IS300h 2014

Recommended Posts

Some advise regarding engine oil please. Prior to purchase of my 2014 IS 300h it has always been serviced by Lexus main dealer. Just today I have a message popped up on the sat nav / media centre disply screen showing engine oil symbol and to contact original main dealer for maintenance (miles away from me).

I have checked oil level and it appears to be low. I need to top up at the very least. The dilema I have is that I do not know what type (make & viscosity of engine oil currently in the vehicle). The 40k service service is 2k away (in line with MOT due end of Mar-19) so I expect engine oil etc will be changed then.

I have read on the 'net that main dealers use oil grade of 0W-20. I do not have that at home but I do have Castrol Magnatec 5w-30 (A5) previously bought for a  Ford Focus. Can I use that and will this be a problem to mix and match oil grade here?

The manual gives multiple oil grades and not knowing what is in there currently is what is causing me confusion.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance.17baab24ac566ed80a3d617f09194205.jpg11c3f3aad5c2be248d1a976e542854a3.jpg

For the best fuel economy you should use a 0w20 synthetic oil. However the make of the oil is not rely a problem. In the hand book it will give a minimum specification for the oil, such as API SL, SM, or ILSAC, and as long as the oil you have meets or exceeds that specification it will be fine to use.
If your oil level on the dipstick is at the low mark or below any engine oil is better than no oil.

If it has been serviced by Lexus then it should have 0W-20 oil in it. If it is actually low then putting in some 5W-30 is better than nothing.

I don't actually believe that message is for low oil, just a maintenance reminder.

As Colin has said 0W - 20 oil and the message is an oil service reminder.

Thanks to All from the prompt replies. I have topped it up by 500ml and will re-check later.

Not sure how the reminder works as last service was on 28/03/2018 and only done 6.5k miles since then.

Service interval is 10k miles or 12 months whichever comes sooner (unless classed as business use and then 12.5k miles I think)
