Hi,

My car randomly started making this terrible noise when releasing the brakes, or just firmly holding it all the way down.

I have recorded it for people to better understand the noise but my wife said it sounds like there is a chicken under the bonnet.

the front brake discs are new, not sure about the pads (bought the car less than a month ago)

rear discs and pads need changing soon, especially the discs.

not sure how that could make the noise though...

thank you.

So the brake pads low warning on many cars is the result of inserting a metal piece into the pad which scrapes against the disc when the pad tthickness reduces to a certain point.  The noise is horrible by design. hth.....

Apols Yuri, my response is not relevant to your question. That’ll teach me about late night posting!!!

Had a similar noise on my IS and NX, plus my current RX. On mine it’s coming from the front pads. Had them cleaned a greased with copper based grease which cured it for a couple of weeks. I’m now just ignoring it, but watch other people’s faces when I creep forwards.

do you think changing the pads will resolve this?

If pads are new (it's a nonsense changing disks and not pads) I would wait 1-2 hundreds miles and then make some hard braking hoping to fix problem.

they already have a least 1k miles on them.

I'd focus more on the brake fluid. That pedal looks just a tad relaxed when you press it. The noise could easily be a valve in the brake master cylinder taking its time to reset because of air in the system.

There's been a discussion here only a day or so ago about the hybrids needing the Toyota system when doing brakes bleeding. Could that be an issue if you've had a bleed recently?

I also think it has something to do with the fluid... problem is, if its a bit complicated, that means I cant go to any local garage to get it done?

Any Toyota Indie will be able to tackle it. It's just a question of how you plan the rest of it.. ie the rear discs etc. Remember it's only for the bleed that you need a garage with techstream.

I cant change the discs or pads on my own. ill have to ask them to change it all. so maybe change rear brakes and discs and bleed the system should solve the problem?

In that case just show it to a mechanic, preferably a Toyota Indie. No harm getting a professional opinion and an estimate. Maybe a pressure leak at the rear discs is causing it?

I think the cost difference between a Toyota Indie and a non-specialist garage will be negligible.

Thing is, you've only had the car a month. You really want a diagnosis first.

Specifically on brake fluid, have you checked its level/condition? Any signs of leakage around the reservoir? There's an outside chance of the master cylinder valve resetting itself if you disconnect the Battery overnight. Just a thought.

I had this; two things I did to fix it. Bleed the brakes using Techstream, and perform a brake reset... just can't remember the name of the function, but it presses and depresses the brakes several times until the car knows where the pads should be... if that makes sense. Came across it just by chance whilst i was playing in the software.
