Lexus health check findings

So today, my is250 went in for a recall on the passenger airbag, while they had the car they gave the car a health check, I haven't had the car long, so I thought it would be good to see what problems if any popped up, well I didn't think I would have a bit of a list, this consisting of

Both driveshaft diff seals weeping (advisory)

Engine oil leak from bank 1 VVTi oil feed pipe (advisory)

Both front caliper sliders seized - front pad shims missing (urgent)

A/C condenser leaking (advisory)

Also, my drivers side headlight washer cover is missing, I have got replacement for it, but Lexus are saying that i need a whole new washer system for both sides, surley I can just get the missing part for the drivers side?  I have attached a picture of what is there at the moment.

Are these common issues on a 2008 Is250 ? Should I be worried, are these easy and cheap to put right, Lexus have obviously quoted to repair the issues, will have to sell house to pay for it 🤣

Finally, if anyone knows of a good Toyota/Lexus independent garage in Portsmouth or surrounding area, that can give me a quote to do the work. 

Any advice, recommendations would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance

They will always find fault - my old one went in for the airbag recall last year and came back with below operation calipers but I know they are fine as I regularly grease them - there was no issue with them and the car passed the MOT a few months later.

Calipers are common issues and its an easy issue to keep on top of it you have the time and the basic tools needed to grease the slide pins. Not hard at all and takes about 10 minutes per corner to do. Front pad shims missing ..... don't these just prevent squeal? Not sure these are required to pass the MOT as they don't perform anything other than as mentioned?

Oil leak from a pipe - to be honest, see where the leak is coming from - if it is actually the pipe then buy a replacement and replace it - a picture would help of the issue

Condensor issue is not common although I guess with age and how it has been used has a bearing on the life of it. As for the washer, I think this needs to be operational as the headlights are HIDS that require the wash jets to be operational. As you are probably aware, these failing is just a one off...

Are the retaining pins for the pads also missing as well as the shims? is that why they have flagged it as urgent.....theoretically could throw a pad??...... almost impossible in reality.

The whole fixing kit is about £70 from lexus.....

Have a chat with a decent Indy and maybe an air con specialist before calling the estate agent! 😋

Thank you for all your replies, I do have a mate who is a mechanic, will get him to look at the car and give me his opinion, was a bit of a shock, I do intend to get all the issues fixed, just not by Lexus 😀, the wife wouldn't let me sell the house to pay for it all.

I had seized slide pins and lexus wanted £300 per caliper, two of them. Took it to local garage for mot and they freed them and said it wasn't bad. Might be worth taking them somewhere and getting them looked at or having a go yourself.

Don't worry about shims, but you need to get your calipers replaced or refurbished. Although, it is much more common for rear calipers to be seized, not front... are you sure?

As for little black clip which goes there - same story here, quoted me £128 for whole washer pump/jet assembly - got these ones instead (you can buy x1 as well):

Yes, they it is the front calipers that are seized, have ordered the missing part for the headlight washer, ordered it last Friday, have had the covers for a while, got them from Lexus North America.

Dealers aren't really interested in fixing a caliper, and when they charge over £150 per hour labour it probably isn't worth asking them to try as they will soon exceed the cost of a new one. DIY or an independent is definitely the way to go.

Once a vehicle is five years old, re-greasing the sliding pins every couple of years should be done as preventative maintenance to avoid this big expense.

Yes calipers are what they consider "unit" and is not repairable, service bulletin simply tells to replace it. Obviously, if they would include greasing pins during every service those calipers would last much longer.

As for preventative maintenance, you kind of need to grease them not every 2 years, but twice every year e.g. my calipers have been rebuilt and fitted last year, yet rear ones are totally stuck again. I am going to try to unstuck, clean and grease them again, but they really need new slider pins to really solve the issue and frequent maintenance.

Brakes on IS250 is kind of poor design overall, undersized front and particularly poor design in the rear.

regular preventative maintenance is the good way to go ............  says he with original calipers and 220k miles approaching :whistling1:

You possibly need to change the boots as it sounds like they are worn and letting in water, or the wrong grease is being used. You shouldn't need to do it that regularly.

Never heard of a new vehicle under three years old with stuck sliding pins.

Well, clearly my car is now approaching 13 years and 186k miles. As previously said, the calipers have been completely "re-manufactured" - meaning all new seals, boots, slider pins etc.

You are right, perhaps they haven't used right grease and that could be the reason, but as everything was "like" brand new I did not bother to take everything apart and re-grease again.

Looking back to service history, first time calipers have been replaced on my car was 40k service at just over 3 years old.
