IS300H comes 2nd overall in Autoexpress "Best cars to own: Driver Power 2019 results" survey

Very interesting to see three Lexus models in the top ten.  I bet if the original Top Gear trio had put that list together the Germans would take top marks and Lexus would be nowhere to be seen!

A pretty strong showing for all Lexus models, but I don’t think there are too many people on this forum totally surprised by these results.  Quality, reliability, comfort, a touch of genuine class that every Lexus owner appreciates.

The same publication still favours the Germans when you read Individual reviews.

They have just given the new 3 series 5/5 based on a 2 litre diesel of all things.

Being the sceptic that I am, I wonder what might go on behind closed doors, envelopes of money being passed around etc. After all, the German motor industry has hardly shown itself to have clean hands in all areas! Japanese cars mostly have legendary reliability, whereas the Germans don't, so something smells slightly fishy to me when I hear about their cars being so wonderful.

How funny, I was reading exactly the same article in the latest autoexpress magazine at a friend’s house yesterday. Great result for Lexus, and the IS also came top of the Reliability list too.

The Auto Express Driver Power Survey is about the only honest review you get from this German owned mag. A real survey written by people who actually own the car and run them day after day, year after year. Not someone on a three day jolly staying at a 5 star hotel with hot and cold running maids paid for by BMW. When you read there Lexus reviews I do wander what the guy is smoking.

Bear in mind there is far more people drive the German cars than Lexus. I also suspect the average punters expectation level moving from a non-premium to a premium car is higher and not met by the Germans than the average Lexus punter, thus the satisfaction levels are lower.

This is a tricky one.

The reason I say this is that a friend had the use of a 320d M Sport for a day a couple of weeks ago, so I had a good play.

All I can say is that, from my limited exposure, it is a seriously impressive car.

I know that diesel is now the devils fuel, but you would honestly struggle to tell that the car was powered with it, such was the smoothness and lack of clatter.

The looks are nothing too exciting and the interior space was ok, but the technology and dash layout were very good.  The sat nav screen and system unfortunately makes the Lexus look antiquated.  The virtual dash and heads up display were excellent and the ride was well dampened on the undulating road we were on.  And it was quick too.

Yes, it still suffers the usual BMW issues, but I couldn't help but feel that it would be an great car to drive around.  So, I can see how the reviewers might like it, especially since things like exclusivity and reliability don't really factor into a magazine review.

I have owned 2 BMW cars and both had reliability issues. My friend had a Lexus and I remember him saying " If you drive from London to Monaco and want to arrive in style, take the BMW. If you want to get back home, take a Lexus.
