Brake Caliper Paint

Can anyone help me please. What is the best method of cleaning your calipers prior to painting, and what is the best type of paint to use?

i used a wire brush ,then washed them.then painted them with high temp paint from Halfords,brake calliper paint.some lads use smoothrite. :)

yes Smoothrite does the job as it needs no primer, stops rust and paints on easily.

Black smoothrite it is then for me....

Is it Gloss or matt.. does anyone know ?

They do it in gloss, not sure about matt.

I have found Hammerite to be the best stuff to use

I used a wirebrush to clean all the muck from the calipers. Then wiped all the dust off using white spirit.

I also used Hammerite smooth (silver) to paint mine. I found that thinning the paint down using Hammerite Paint Brush Cleaner made it alot easier to apply the paint coats on the calipers....just a tip :winky:

Just to let you know, ive just painted my calipers 2 days ago using color care engine laquer paint. its available in most colours but i used silver paint with black calipre stickers on top.

the paint went on brilliantly with no mess, the first coat was dry in less than 10 minutes and after a second coat i waited another 20 minutes before applying the stickers. no need to wait days for the paint to harden off.

The only thing to watch for is dont spray them with laquer afterwards as it can react with the paint.

the paint cost me less than 4 quid !!!!! and ive got enough left for the next 10 years

Just washed mine with car suds and toothbrush - left to dry for a bit then painted with Dark Blue Smoothrite - chrome stckers and regular spray laquer next day to finish - lubbly jubbly ...

So can I use any Hammerite metal paint, like a can of Satin Black or will it flake off under the heat?

Should be able to use any hammerite - seems to stand up to the heat well.

I painted a caliper recently (luckily not one I need right now)... I used Halfords Brake Caliper Paint.... anyone used this?... what did I do wrong...

I painted about 2 coats within 1 hour... but it has got air bubles in the paint and left pits... also it was still VERY soft after 24 hours, so I put it in the oven at 125C for 2 hours... and left it another week... it's STILL soft!... what is going on... I need to sand it down and try again, mabe with a spray gun... but it says it should be fully cured in 12 hours!... I can't really do anything with it because it's too soft, and it says not to re-coat for 6 weeks...

I'm really irritated... good thing I'm not waiting to put it back on the car...

Did you clean it properly b4 painting?

You really need to use hammerite smooth for the best job,and the finish will only be as good as the preperation.........be thorough.

It was bone dry and wire brushed... Surely hammerite isn't really good for hot calipers... I found it discoloured on track days...

Maybe you needed to use some primer,which is why its not needed with hammerite smooth.

you might find that the problem is that the 1st coat had not cured properly, therefore the 2nd coat never fully goes off leaving it soft

Hmm... I thought that, but it says you can re-coat after 20 minutes.

Oh and when its tacky put the caliper stickers on and it will pull the sticker in and it will look like its embossed. :D

I've just noticed its a 2004 post...
