Rx450h 2010 vs 2014

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I've been looking to trade in my avensis 2012 2.2 against a used rx450h .now I've looked at quite a few and I have found the following issue 2013/14 model 25-40k miles interiors look rough seats etc  price range 22-26k , ok with extended warranty to cover issues to just over 100k and 10-12 years age so good for hi spec model .or buy 2010-2012 in really nice condition top spec all goodies etc for 17-20k money wise and 60-80k mileage but it limits you on extended warranty which puts you off higher spec model .I know this may be a big ask but what has everyone else spent ie main dealer / specialist small dealer ,vehicle Year ,spec ,mileage and what did you all pay ?

all help would be helpful

regards Alan

Ours is a 63 plate (November 2013) Advance. Had 33.5k on the clock when we bought it in February last year and we paid just under £25k for it. Certainly didn't look rough inside then and still doesn't now at 47k.

Just over a year ago I bought a 2010 SE-L Premier from Lexus Stockport. It’s Cadoxton Slate over Ivory and had 80,000 miles.

In the last year it’s done over 20,000 miles faultlessly, it does look a little tired externally (is the paint particularly thin?) but this is mainly because of selfish arseholes in car parks. The interior wasn’t mint when I got it but was pretty close, it’s a little worse for wear in places now but isn’t awful for a 9 year old car. It does polish up beautifully though and after a wash still looks a million bucks.

The Ivory interior wears quite well for its colour, I think.

I paid £17,495 for it, which still feels wayyy too much but only because all my previous cars combined cost this much. I tend to not worry about resale values, because they’re tedious. If I take the purchase price and mileage it’s cost me less than a pound a mile which I’m happy with #manmaths.

I probably won’t have it too much longer, because circumstances have changed, but I do adore it. Yes it’s thirsty, but it weighs 2 tons. Yes, it’s a pain to park in tight car parks, but it’s a great place to be stuck.

The red one sounds canny and was my preferred colour. Wishing you well in your search!

We bought a 2014 Advance 2 months ago from Lexus Glasgow, 28k and bodywork and interior are excellent. Was £24k with 3 years servicing and a years warranty then got £1k contribution to finance that we took to get the £1k off and paid off.

The interior on mine wore very well. It had 55k on the clock when I sold mine with no real wear on the interior whatsoever. Of course, these are usually used to ferrying kids around so the wear may be due to children.

From the auto express article:

"Comfort

The RX’s ride is firm at the best of times. On 19-inch wheels you’ll probably find it uncomfortable, especially for long journeys"

^^well thats just utter ******* isn't it!

Yes, absolute rubbish. Ours is on 19-inchers and it's the best, most comfortable ride we've had.

Possibly confusing 20" wheels?

I liked "Also worth having a look at is the Jeep Grand Cherokee, along with the Range Rover Sport. The latter has a far better cabin than the Lexus, and it’s much nicer to drive, but its reliability record isn’t as good. "  Where its "reliability record  isn't as good" means it is opposite ends of the spectrum... and I even own a Landrover!

I bought a 2014 Advance earlier this year which had suffered expensive-looking damage to its exhaust system and the plastic undertray was scraped and held on with a cable tie - and that was an approved car from a Lexus dealer. I swapped it for a better example under their exchange policy.....

Check the one you're looking at hasn't been used by someone optimistic about its off-roading abilities (negligible).

Tailored rubber mats are available which would keep it looking good inside.

Be realistic about the economy you'll get, I doubt it'll be as good as the Avensis. Plenty of discussion about that on various threads here, mid 30s probably average at this time of year, which will drop a little in the colder weather.

I also went from Avensis to RX. Not many choices if you're after a big Japanese estate nowadays. I'm not convinced that the boot is as big as the Toyota's, but I'll find out for sure when I pack it with the family and all our luggage for a fortnight's holiday soon. I know it's going to be a great drive though, far more enjoyable on the hills and mountains in France where my petrol Avensis struggled last year.

It'd be good to see a relatively low number of owners on the V5 (don't take the dealer's word for it, have a look for yourself even if they want to conceal the previous keeper's address due to GDPR) and it having been looked after by Lexus dealers for much of its life even if it's been taken to a good independent in more recent years as it's got a bit older.

Thanks for the advice I'm going to make a list to ask or check over on the car ,the cars for my wife to be honest and it will be doing very low miles as she works her business from home after taking it full time .so I'm not to concerned about mileage .the only reason we bought the avensis was the wife travelling 50 miles a day to work and the dog ,so the salesman is in for a testing fitting session with does the dog fit lol.hes 50+ kilos

Very nice-looking car - that's an unusual colour for an RX and it looks great!

To be honest I haven't got a clue as to whether that price is good, bad or spot on. All I can say is that Lexus Approved Used Cars from Lexus dealers also come with a full 12-month Lexus Warranty (including breakdown cover from the AA) so what would Boss give you?

Given that, I notice that Lexus Reading have a 62 plate (29.09.12) Premier in with 77k on the clock (must only be recent because the listing is "awaiting images" but you can ask them to email a video walkround to you) for £19,500. Would that be better value - I don't know?

I have to say, that is a seriously good looking car and an usual colour for an RX.

Given that I do very low miles, I was comfortable shopping above the 100k mark. That's where the bargains seem to be. It seems to be a major psychological threshold, for British motorists anyway. I'm not sure it's as meaningful as the price differential between 80k and 100k suggests.

Looks nice and I particularly like the red of these earlier cars.  The later ones seem only to have a burgundy red until the 4th generation which again is available in a lighter red.

Of course everybody loves a bargain and most people have a budget they don't wish to exceed.  However, finding one of these cars is not like looking for a Mondeo where there is so much choice at any given time.  If you seriously like a RX450h you have seen and it checks out fine and price is reasonable I suggest you go for it.  I am still kicking myself for missing out on a 2015 RX450h Premier which was about 2K more than  I wanted to pay. It was the same silver as the Premier I went on to buy subsequently but the car I missed out on had the wood trim package including heated and part wood steering wheel and adaptive cruise control plus it had the all cream interior I liked.  I told the Lexus Dealer just before he closed that I wished to think it over over night and would contact them the next morning.  To be fair the dealer had said somebody else had expressed an interest in it (but this can be a ploy to make a sale),  Anyway, when I responded the next morning I was told the car had been sold.  Thereafter, I found that there were very few cars that had the same spec and internal and external colour I wanted.  It took about another 2 months to source a car that came near to the one I lost but lacked several features.  Even having bought my car I continued for a further couple of months to search all adverts for Silver Premiers but none matched the one I lost. Just my experience.

Well took the wife to have a look at the car ,it was better in the flesh deep metalic red new tyres just had big service . Spent two hours going through everything with the sales guy he was very knowledgable .it was on a posh farm unit inspected under flouresant lights and then out in sun checked underneath all under protection panels unmarked .the entertainment rear system Bluetooth head phones were in there plastic wrapping still in centre consul unmarked .sales guy took us out for a long test drive shopping between me and the wife .it was almost silent inside and couldn't tell when it was using the engine or Battery unless we bought up the display .wife fell in love with it .so hence we have taken the plunge and put a deposit down will be trading our old car in which owes me nothing .total figure to pay will be £13950 ,it will be the wife tootle about play thing doing about 2k a year mileage going to proberly keep for 3-5 years .the only problem I've foreseen for the future is getting the next car after this that will compete .The car snob factor is starting to rear its ugly head . To put it in perspective I said I've see a hybrid rav 4 for the right money low miles .and got ummm no thank you lol. One last thing is the stereo system is  the best I've heard in a car that hasn't been modified .ill post up pics when we get it on the drive way within the week.

Congratulations on the new ride!

I completely agree about the Mark Levinson speakers. They handle everything well, from classical to progressive house 🙂

Excellent, great result Alan - you certainly won't be disappointed!

In fact, the only disappointing thing about this whole topic is that it's only going to be driven about 2,000 miles a year!

EDIT:
Actually, in all seriousness, that means that the car is going to be sat around for long periods of time, which hybrids don't particularly like.

A standard car has a big and beefy 12V Battery because it has to supply at least 300A to the starter motor while it cranks the engine, if not more. Hybrids don't have starter motors and all the 12V Battery does is to power the entry/exit systems and the computers to bring the car to the READY state, which, as you can see below, only takes 15.32A rather than 300A plus. This means that Lexus can save a bit of money by putting in a smaller capacity 12V Battery, which in turn means that it goes flat sooner than others if not used on a regular basis.

It's not very common but also not unheard of either, for someone to get back to the airport car park after a two-week holiday to a flat Battery and a non-starting car.

Given that, I always carry one of these in the glovebox for such eventualities. I've never had to use it on my own car yet being as it's our only car and used daily, but I've helped a couple of other motorists out and can say that these little units work brilliantly.

Alternatively (or even as well as - certainly no harm in having both) you could go for one of these solar trickle chargers to help keep the Battery topped up in the first place.

Yes, the ride on our 3RX F Sport is fine. This was something we checked before buying it as the majority of the reviews at the time  seem to think that the ride was poor 🤷🏾‍♂️

We used to have a Great Dane and she was very comfortable in the boot. We did have the Lexus dog guard fitted though, otherwise she would have made her way in to the back seats 😂.

I was under the impression that this issue was rectified on the 3RX models?

How can it be rectified other than installing a Battery with higher capacity?

Various systems still draw power so the Battery will still go flat if the car isn't used very often. I can't remember the exact figures but my 2013 RX450h has a Battery capacity of fifty-something Ah, whereas my 2005 RX300 had a Battery of almost 80Ah.

Possibly by ensuring less energy is drawn when the car is stationary for example through the alarm system which is usually one of the only things on in a vehicle when it's switched off

Hmmm interesting topic can we do a search for the best battery highest output and quality etc. Euro carparts do a few options Bosch and exide 160-200 pounds .

Even the service Battery is 'special' and expensive I read in a search going backaways. It's a deep discharge Battery.  Someone replaced original with slightly greater capacity and much cheaper one but it soon failed.  It would be useful to know if anybody had used a cheaper replacement that had proved satisfactory over reasonable time. Don't be shy to admit LOL.
